Painting during pregnancy

Can you paint during pregnancy? I am not doing the walls due to dh not letting me, but i would like to help with the wood-work. So the paint i'd be using is primer, undercoat and gloss. Don't think you can get less-smelly ones of these.

Its not a case of the hard work side of it as its not, its more a case of damaging little one with fumes etc?

I decorated with gloss when pg
didn't do me or dds any harm
But i don't think it was the cleverest thing i could have done

and ensure good ventilation

Oh just lounge on the sofa with a plate of biscuits giving directions and take him up a cup of tea/coffee occasionally!!

It is not recommended as all paints have volatile toxins (fumes) in to a certain extent.

Having said that I did the gloss work in my openplan lounge (8 doors + frames +skirting + stair rails) at 3-4m preg. We just didn't sleep there when we did the bulk of it so we weren't breathing in all the fumes.

You can get waterbased gloss these days which has a lower fume content.

i was painting dd's walls and woodwork whilst heavilly pg, me and dp did some on weekends, i did rest myself, climbing ladder to reach top!
we used low odour paint for walls and always kept door and all windows open upstairs..i was told it had to be done weeks before baby was born as chemical can still be in air, same as carpets!!??

Yes, waterbased paint is better

and a few days before i found out i was PG, i was really ill(now i know it was morning/all day sickness) so came home from work..felt a little better so decided(???????) to paint understairs cupboard????with no window and with boiler insode to v.warm, and then creosote the back fence?!!!..dd was/is fine

I singelhandedly pained my lounge when 36 weeks pg with DS1 as I got fed up with waiting for DP to get his arse into gear. I went up lagdders and everything. DP nearly had a fit when he came home

I didn't do the best job, but it was better than the turquoise monsrtosity the previous tenant left us with

We painted the baby's room last weekend and are painting the extension this weekend,although both rooms are only being emulsioned.
Looks lovely but I was thoroughly exhausted afterwards(35 weeks pg),so think I may just "supervise" this weekend.

I read somewhere that you can buy 'organic paint' or something like that. If not, then use waterbased. Worth avoiding first 3 months. Also you could use a mask to prevent inhaling fumes and apparently you should wear gloves and keep your arms covered because you can absorb the toxins too!! Hope that's helpful.
