One of my best friend's has just had a little girl, and I want to get her something special and/or useful.

To anyone who has kids, just wondering what did you like most / appreciate most as a gift for your newborn.

We got a five-year-diary. It's called a line a day, for documenting all the wee things. 2&1/2 years on, I've written in it every day and it's really lovely looking back at the memories :)

I really appreciated the big bag full of consumables that my Mum bought us. Nappies, Baby shampoo, bum cream etc. And the very thoughtful addition of a bar of Vanish!

Fluffy towels were also a godsend because it turns out you can never have enough once you have a baby. (And in a colour that recovers well from poo stains - so much the better!)

Some giant Muslins (my ones are from m&s). We're great. Used them as a blanket, as a place to put baby down if out and about and wanted her to have a little stretch. I also used them as a sunshade on the pushchair (but make sure that friend is aware not to cover the pram/pushchair completely as it raises the temp inside horrendously quickly). Because they were so big I could lay it over the top of the hood and tie the other end to the pram handle. So plenty of air getting in but baby was shaded.

Sockons were the best thing ever

Someone bought me a big multipack of babywipes, which were useful

I had, and have since given several times, a nice basket with all things for when you are stuck on the sofa feeding or being slept on... tissues, drink, snack, hairband, hand cream, lip balm, magazine etc. I then used to put the tv remote, my phone, kindle or book etc in it, so here I sat down all I had to do was grab that and I had everything to hand. It was fab, and mine is still, 3 years later, on the table in the loving room filled with useful stuff!

I usually pop a mini bottle of prosecco, nice chocolates etc in too for the gift. x
