Which sling/carrier from newborn?

Wonder if you could give some advice to a confused first time mum-to-be!

I would like to have a comfy sling to wear around the house so I can have baby close, I hope to breastfeed so would like one that is good for this too.
I would also like a carrier for going out and about with.

I suffer from lower back pain so need to make sure it's something that won't strain me too much. I have looked at the Baby Bjorn Active, but this doesn't really look like it would be good for around the home.

Is there one sling/carrier that will tick all these boxes or should I look at 2 different carriers - one for at home and one for going out? I'm really confused to all the different types - the ones that go over one shoulder look uncomfortable.

What would your recommendations be?

Thanks in advance.

Can I ask a question - do the wrap slings not get really really hot in summer? I was thinking about getting a hugabub but all that jersey combined with thirty degree days does not seem to be a recipe for success. My first is due in August.

i've found them ok in our summer's and my friend even used it in oz. you can get gauze wraps for hotter weather though if you got too hot in one.

nappyaddict · 23/03/2007 19:11

we've got the hopp.

A friend of mine used a hugabub for her baby last summer (and you remember how hot that was!) and she says if you dress yourself and baby appropriately and tuck a muslin between yourself and baby's face, they're fine. I've bought a rebozo though for my bump - if they're cool enough to be used in Mexico, then they're cool enough for the UK! I've practised using it with DS adn a selection of his soft toys and it seems fine.

nappyaddict · 23/03/2007 19:23

you can get shorter length ones for the summer so you are only wrapped in one later of fabric.

nappyaddict · 23/03/2007 19:37

rucksack carries are best in the summer or if you have a short wrap the cradle or hip carry.

you can do that with woven wraps too. i found once ds was about 4 months he was too heavy to carry for long in stretchy wraps.

sorry I hadn't replied nappyaddict, I'm ok for now thanks, I've just won a tricotti on ebay so going to try that for now and maybe get a soft carrier in a few weeks when he prefers to be upright.

yes or you can tie it on first and then add the baby with the front cross carry, front wrap cross carry and the pocket wrap cross carry. there are probably others too where you can pre tie but i only know of those. i would suggest joining TBW as i am sure someonoe on there will know of loads more pre-tie carries you can do with a woven wrap. woven wraps are pretty too
