Which sling/carrier from newborn?

Wonder if you could give some advice to a confused first time mum-to-be!

I would like to have a comfy sling to wear around the house so I can have baby close, I hope to breastfeed so would like one that is good for this too.
I would also like a carrier for going out and about with.

I suffer from lower back pain so need to make sure it's something that won't strain me too much. I have looked at the Baby Bjorn Active, but this doesn't really look like it would be good for around the home.

Is there one sling/carrier that will tick all these boxes or should I look at 2 different carriers - one for at home and one for going out? I'm really confused to all the different types - the ones that go over one shoulder look uncomfortable.

What would your recommendations be?

Thanks in advance.

Coorie, Kimmer or Peerie from here. DD has been in one since she was born last Feb. Not constantly, obviously!! Coorie for the winter and a Kimmer or Peerie for the summer.

peachygirl · 21/03/2007 21:36

coorie coorie coorie!!!

SoupDragon · 21/03/2007 21:37

I suffer from lower back problems too and it's been fine. Fab for bf-ing in when you get the knack and virtually idiot proof. It does go iver one shoulder but if you've got it on right, it's fine. I didn't believe it and made my first one - DD still goes in it every day on the school run.

I'm a first-timer too, but I was thinking about trying the Tricotti . It's a pouch sling, which looks really easy and comfortable, but goes over both shoulders.

fluffyslippers · 22/03/2007 11:37

Thanks for the suggestions - the coories look comfortable, can you wear these in winter too?

i really like mei tai's and wraps.

nappyaddict · 22/03/2007 11:45

in fact i have one like this to sell if you are interested. i bought it on a whim but realised i have more too manby as it is so am selling it unused.

mei-tai

nappyaddict · 22/03/2007 11:46

slings and pouches are ok but once my baby got to about 4 months i found it put far too much strain on my back and shoulders for anything longer than half an hour.

Oooh so many suggestions!

Nappyaddict - I do like the look of the mei tai, is the one you have for sale suitable for any size or do I need to check what size I need first?

Karri-me wrap sling. Very soft and comfy and does 5 positions. As ds got older and heavier, it did pull on my lower back a bit, but I moved the material down over my bottom and that seemed to sort it out.

nappyaddict · 22/03/2007 13:02

no it's for any size.

katierocket · 22/03/2007 13:06

nappyaddict, if fluffyslippers doesn't want it - I'd be interested.

I have a coorie - agree they are great, easy to put on but mine does gove me back and shoulder ache. DS is 14 lbs and likes to be in cradle position. I also have a kari-me which is OK but hard to get tied exactly right - well for the cradle position anyway. I am currently looking at tri-cotti which is same as coorie but goes over both shoulders.

nappyaddict · 22/03/2007 13:08

with slings you can't really do a back carry and as your baby gets bigger any other position will put too much strain on you. that's why i like mei-tais, you can use them from newborn right through to toddlerhood. with slings and pouches you can guarentee you will have to buy something else.

nappyaddict · 22/03/2007 13:09

i like mom ties and colibribaby mei tais best.

SoupDragon · 22/03/2007 13:17

"with slings and pouches you can guarentee you will have to buy something else." Um, no.

conkertree · 22/03/2007 13:51

i am really keen to get a didymos muminfife but havent heard of anyone who actually has one - and have never seen one out and about.

what size did you get? my dh is 6ft 2 but i'm 5ft 3 so wanted one that we could both use. but do the bigger ones swamp smaller people?

nappyaddict · 22/03/2007 13:52

soupdragon - i know i could never carry a 2 year old around in a sling!! i found it really painful when my ds was just a few months old in one.

kittywaitsfornumber6 · 22/03/2007 13:56

I always put my new borns in a TRICOTTI, I used those hammock type slings with a ring years ago and found them horribly uncomfortable , they hurt my back and the ring dug into my shoulder. Some people really like them though.

i am near kilsyth - work in stirling. neither of us are particularly big width wise, so probably a 6 would do us both - will have a look on the german site and see what they say, although i have put the cost of one in my list of things to buy and budget for since i am pretty convinced by everything i've read about them so far.

no problem - thanks very much for the offer anyway - i will check out the websites and we'll eventually make a decision probably with about three days to go - its one thing i want from birth so will hopefully buy it in the next couple of months (21 weeks just now)and get practising with a teddy or something.

nappyaddict · 23/03/2007 09:22

fluffyslippers do you still want it cos katierocket is interested.

fluffyslippers · 23/03/2007 10:50

Nappyaddict - I do like it, but not ready to buy one right now so if katierocket would like it, that's fine. I'm keeping an eye on your ebay listings!
