Pregnancy and UTI (TMI) fears

I'm 16weeks pregnant and about a week ago I went to see my GP due to horrible migraines, we got talking she checked my eyes etc and took a urine sample and sent me off with instructions to take some
Paracetamol and stay in dark room.
Today I got a call from GP to tell me sample showed I have a UTI and have been prescribed a weeks course of MacroBID to clear it up.
I was Shock as I have not been having any discomfort or pain at all apart from having to go to the loo a bit more frequently which I attributed to being 4months pregnant.
I have just read the potential side effects of the antibiotic and I've worked myself up they include:

  • dizziness and drowsiness
  • delayed clotting of blood, fever, anemia, and a persistent cold
  • skin rashes or reactions and joint pains
  • hair loss
  • raised pressure of skull causing severe headaches
  • UTI by germs which are not sensitive to MacroBID

And the worse for me

  • nerves outside the spinal cord might be affected causing changes to the sense of feeling and use of muscles, in addition, headache, extreme changes of mood or mental state, confusion, weakness, blurred vision. These effects might be severe and in some cases permanent.

And also jaundice .

I know I need to take the medication as my GP advised but the long list of side effects has petrified me, I look after my 2yo DS through the day and scared i won't be able to look after him properly if I get some of these side effects and also I have a 1hr commute driving in total to and from work everyday and again blurred vision and dizziness would not help.

It's probably just my mind running off with me and I'm also upset at having to take the medication whilst pregnant as women in 3rd trimester aren't even allowed to take it due to it potentially harming the baby. I know I'm only in my 2nd but I can't help but worry.

Has anyone taken this during pregnancy? Can someone put my mind at ease and tell me I'm just overreacting?

I don't know about MacroBID but I'm 10 weeks and have just been prescribed Amoxicillin for a UTI. I have no UTI symptoms so was surprised but the doc said they treat as a matter of course as it's riskier to leave a UTI untreated when pregnant as it could spread to kidneys.
The side effects on leaflets are worst case scenarios - they have to cover themselves but I think it's unlikely to affect you like that.
I'm going to take my course.
Why don't you go and chat with the pharmacist when you pick up the tablets?

snoopypoodle · 21/06/2017 13:41

I have already collected them and just read the leaflet with the side effects so not had a chance to speak to them.

It probably doesn't help that I'm feeling teary today and feel like i just need a break and I won't cope well with 2 DCs despite planning the pregnancy.

This happened to me twice. As someone I ho has had their fair share of UTIs I couldn't believe I didn't know and had no symptoms. I think they are super careful wit pregnancies. I took the antibiotics I was prescribed after being assured that they were safe for baby. No probs since.

You do sound a bit down snoopy.
Do you have a DP around to help?
Are you working PT or FT? Why not start the course on a day you're working so you won't be worried about looking after your 2yo. If you get side effects then you go home ill and ride it out just you.
How long is the course?

snoopypoodle · 21/06/2017 23:11

It's a weeks course but I work pt evenings so I have DS through the day everyday anyway and work 5hrs on an evening. I started it today as I know I need to to avoid any possible kidney infections just hope I don't have any worse conditions because of it Sad

I've just finished my course of macrobid and the only thing I noticed was neon wee! Try not to worry too much!

snoopypoodle · 22/06/2017 09:48

Thank you for the replies.
I've had an upset stomach this morning but not sure if it's something I've eaten or the antibiotics.

But I'm a bit calmer now, just v tired which I can only put down to the pregnancy, I could stay in bed until noon if I could.

Macrobid gave me awful headaches and terrible muscle aches around my hips. It was horrible but stopped quickly after taking them.

Mrsrochesterscat · 22/06/2017 13:35

I don't want to worry you further snoopy, but UTIs in pregnancy can be quite dangerous for baby. Please do take the antibiotics. So long as your GP is aware you are pregnant, they will be suitable to take when PG.

snoopypoodle · 22/06/2017 13:49

Mrs thanks. I've started the course yesterday as I know it can lead to kidney infections and other complications.
Just didn't feel great about seeing the huge list of side effects when I first looked over it.

Fingers crossed nothing so far just a bit more tired than usual.

The hospital found out that I had a uti when I had my 13 week scan 8 weeks ago. Took them two weeks to tell me and two days to get my amoxicillin prescription from my GP. I also had no symptoms which is apparently common. I see that you've already started taking them and I'm sure you'll be fine but you can always ask your pharmacists opinion if it helps put your mind at rest.
