Pregnancy

Early scans

Hi all...

Currently pregnant after having a MC only in March. Obviously very anxious about this time and a friend has mentioned paying to have an early scan for peace of mind?

Now before I call them and look like a donut - how early are early scans? I know some say to wait until 10 weeks but I am so petrified right.

Thanks

I had an early scans at about 6 weeks I think. There was a suspicion that the baby was ectopic so I had early scans to find out firstly where the embryo implanted and then another one a few weeks later to see if it was viable. I dont think they can see very much if it's any earlier than 6 weeks as it's so small, although I'm not sure if thats due to the equipment used??

Thanks @patsysprincess I was going to try and hold out for 7 weeks (I'm close to five weeks now) I will call them and see if I can book in for then x

I had one today at 8 weeks. Baby is little more than a blob, but they were able to identify a strong heartrate and see that all was going well. I loved it but had the circumstances been different and it was bad news I'd still be pleased to know now rather than waiting for the 12 weeks scan.

See if you can wait till 8 weeks. Then you should see something definitive. Fingers crossed for you Flowers

I had a scan with both of mine at 8 weeks, as far as I understood you should definitely be able to see the heartbeat by then.

Pinkheart5912 · 20/06/2017 14:51

Most places will do them for 6 weeks, mine was £65 when I had it done in both my pregnancies. I had one at 6 weeks each time

Presh1234 · 20/06/2017 14:54

I had my first one at 5w6d and the heart was flying. Had a second one at 9w and the wee heart had stopped at 7w4d. Would much rather have found out earlier than waiting for 12 weeks! Hope it all goes well.xx

If you can wait till 8 weeks as the chances of having a successful pregnancy after seeing a heartbeat at 8 weeks are something like 95% good luck whatever you decide

i had an early scan at 6weeks for free in nhs due to a previous miscarriage baby is just a blob but could hear a lovely strong heartbeat although ppl don't always hear a heartbeat at 6weeks

AncientOva · 22/06/2017 12:10

I've had three mmcs and usually have an early scan at 8 weeks.

Unfortunately, it doesn't tend to reassure me for very long, so I have had to come to terms with the anxiety as much as possible (I tend to go swimming a lot in the first trimester as it calms me down). So I'm definitely in the hold out as long as you can camp because it makes the wait for your dating scan shorter and easier. Good luck, early pregnancy after mc is bloody tough. Flowers

I had an early scan at 8 weeks, although when I was scanned the sonographer said it was much earlier, only 6.5 weeks. It cost £75 and we got 4 print outs and could see the babys heart beat clearly. It was well worth it.

holbycityaddict · 22/06/2017 12:41

I took myself of to the epu for a scan in early pregnancy I was about 5 weeks and they saw the sack and pole and after a rescan about 7 weeks bingo there was monkey moos heartbeat I'd wait til 6 weeks !!!

twinkle1972 · 22/06/2017 13:22

I had mine at 6+4 and found healthy bean! Now 13 weeks. Good luck!

Natsku · 22/06/2017 14:47

I just had one today at 8 weeks. Couldn't really see much, just a big dark blob they said was the sac or whatever and part if it fluttering which they said was the heartbeat.

With DD I had one at 9 weeks and saw a little kidney bean shaped body dancing around like mad.

Owl1011 · 23/06/2017 12:43

If you can afford a private scan then I'd definitely do it to put your mind at rest. I'd personally wait until around the 7-8 week mark as it might be too early to see much otherwise and you don't want to worry yourself unnecessarily Smile
