I found out I was pregnant on the 28th feb when I was about 3 1/2 pregnant, so 3 weeks ago. When I went to the EPU yesterday they reckon I am only 5-6 weeks pregnant, but I can't be 5 weeks can I?? As I wouldn't have been pregnant when I tested postive. I am really confused.

Congratulations!

What was the date of the first day of your last period? I think it also has some bearing depending on how long your cycle is, my hospital tends to work on the presumption that everyone is on a 28 day cycle where as I was closer to 35 days.

Linnet · 20/03/2007 21:52

ggrr lost end of message. I meant to add that I went for a scan and they told me I wasn't as far as long as I had worked out so changed the due date and everything. I kept explaining that my cycle wasn't 28 days but they wouldn't listen to me just went by their charts.
This was 3 years ago though.

SparklyGothKat · 20/03/2007 21:52

5th of feb, normal 28 day cycle.

SparklyGothKat · 20/03/2007 21:53

which means I am 6 weeks not 5.

mmm yes but the sperm and egg can fertilise a few days after bd and then not implant until a few days later etc which would account for several days. It does seem odd but I know 3 people who absolutely know when they got pregnant - contraceptive failure, holiday conception, IVF!!!!!!!!! By the scans and dates etc they were given different due dates by up to two weeks!!!!

Hope that makes sense but basically the early scan is usually very accurate to within 2-3 days

SparklyGothKat · 20/03/2007 21:58

she said that that scan showed that the baby is only 5 weeks, but put on the report 5-6 weeks. We also saw the heart beating which I didn't think happened till 6 weeks

OP posts:
Linnet · 20/03/2007 21:58

that date makes you 6 weeks pregnant but remember you didn't conceive on the 5th you would have conceived about the 19th, ovulation is usually around 14 days into the cycle.

SparklyGothKat · 20/03/2007 22:03

i know that, just confused, doesn't take a lot at mo!!! If I was only 5 weeks I wouldn't have been pregnant or producing enough HCG to get a postive result, though would I?? Confused

OP posts:
CarGirl · 20/03/2007 22:05

HCG levels depend on individual and how sensitive the test is and how concentrated it is in your urine - I always test positive very quickly (before period due) even though I ovulate very late as I have a very long cycle. I reckon you are probably 5.5 weeks pregnant????

SparklyGothKat · 20/03/2007 22:07

I see, this is my 6th pregnancy, but only have 3 children (2 losses) and I am still confused, lol bet you all think I am silly now.. lol

Yes, according to your period you are 6 weeks, like you said. I had something similar when I went to the EPU. I thought I was 7 weeks 2 days at the time I went for the scan at the EPU but for some reason the woman doing the scanning felt I was only 6 weeks and 4 days. My period has always been totally bang on the dot on time so I was positive about my dates and I told her this.

Anyway, I was really confused about this and didn't know what exactly I should use to reckon my due date. However, when I went for my nuchal scan at 12 weeks they agreed with me and put my due date back to what it would be according to my LMP. The said the size of the baby was on the small end of the spectrum for its stage but still fell into that category and there was no need to have ever changed the due date.

The only thing I can think of that happened with me and with you is that the baby was smaller than average on the scan done by the EPU. If you are sure of your dates, when you go for your nuchal scan mention this to them and ask them whether the baby fits into the due date according to your LMP or whether there is a reason to leave it with the altered due date. I want to mention that I was able to double check the dates again with a scan done at nearly 18 weeks and that scan also correlated to the due date according to my period, not what the EPU sonographer said. In addition both the sonographer at the nuchal scan and my obstetrician both said they don't normally change the date if it's less than a week's difference to what a scan shows if you are positive of your dates. Hope this helps!

mummytosteven · 20/03/2007 22:10

Yes, I wouldn't have thought you could see a hb before 6 weeks either, as in the 5 - 6 week stage I understand that the fetal pole is still developing. Anyway I agree with Lemmiwinks that any discrepancy with the dating will get ironed out at future scans. When I had DS I thought I was 7.5, they thought I was 1.5 weeks behind that at early scan, then at 15 week scan they changed the EDD again by 0.5 weeks.

SparklyGothKat · 20/03/2007 22:11

what I mean is that if I was only 5 weeks, I would have concieved on the 26th-ish feb, but I tested postive on the 28th, which is impossible.

OP posts:
CarGirl · 20/03/2007 22:15

what I'm failing to make clear (too tired tonight) is that I think the scan is wrong by at least a few days for definite. I think you could probably test positive 4-5 days after conceiving????? I certainly felt really really unwell within days of conceiving (ie in hindsight when I finally realised why I was feeling ill)

SparklyGothKat · 20/03/2007 22:17

sorry cargirl, it is very confused I thought that no test will show postive till 10 days past concieving

OP posts:
SparklyGothKat · 20/03/2007 22:20

but I also know for sure, that I concieved between the 16-19th feb, as that is the only time we BD

OP posts:
CarGirl · 20/03/2007 22:25

this is what happened to SIL she only did it on a weekend away yet her due date was a week behind hers - she ended up 2 weeks overdue after their due date and the baby wasn't over cooked!

I think the sperm can hang around for a couple of days after IYSWIM - perhaps you have hard to crack eggs - or your cells haven't rapidly divided.

It's not an exact science all these things are just averages!

I mean how can they change the IVF date??????? But they did - they know to the hour as to when the embryo was created!

SparklyGothKat · 20/03/2007 22:27

thanks Cargirl, I am going to bed now, really tired. I guess it will all be more clearer at my dating scan.

OP posts:
Chocolatepenny · 21/03/2007 08:56

Hi think they can tell you with more accuracy at your 12wk, but till them I would go on your dates, since you know your body best.
My EDD from period would have been 15 of March but dating scan (12wk) said 22 March so I go on that although baby can be 2 wks later than this, How depressing!

nappyaddict · 17/04/2007 03:56

i know a midwife and she told me the most accurate time to be scanned is 6 - 10 weeks. in that case why most places don't do it until 12 weeks is beyond me!

NewDKmum · 17/04/2007 08:58

The same thing happened to me a couple of months ago at a 6 weeks' scan! I was equally confused/worried as I had 28 days cycle and was pretty sure when I'd conceived. However; at the nuchal scan they recalculated the date and we were bang on back to the EDD I had originally calculated.

Congratulations!

chirpygirl · 17/04/2007 09:06

They did this with me as well, I had an early scan and it said 5+. I asked what that meant and they said over 5 weeks, but it could be 6...well talk about guessing!
Then at my dating scan they did the same and said 14+... and yet they can give me an exact date my baby will be born

lulumama · 17/04/2007 10:50

hang on a sec ! no-one gives you an exact date teh baby will be born ! it is an estimated due date! 5% of babies arrive on their EDD< the vast majority, in the 2 weeks before and after that date

an EDD is based on the first day of your last LMP, based on a 28 day cycle, which of course not every woman has.. so they givve you an EDD

and then we fix on that in our minds as the actual date, not the estimated one !

better if they said , your baby will be born sometime towards the end of May, for example!
