I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is great: 024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hello all. Very glad to find this thread though I feel slightly fraudulent as my problem is more intense and overwhelming nausea than frequent vomiting. I'm around 8 weeks, due roughly 12th Feb. This is my second- DS is 19 months. I had much more frequent vomiting when pregnant with him and was signed off work for 5 weeks. Giving me hope to read your messages.

Mustang27 · 09/07/2017 19:16

Hi Sadie few of us on our second time round HG pregnancies oh and a few nutters on their 4th or 5th sorry ladies you are absolute troopers but a little insane Wink. You are absolutely not a fraud I think all of us have said (when not in double figures) we would take the sickness over the nausea any day it's bloody debilitating. Hope you have got some help with your wee one.

Oh god dead that's awful feel so sorry for your friends dd. I wish her a speedy recovery. Oh god coco pops sound truly awful lol but if it's a safe early morning snack for you. I see most hours it's very weird as I'm only 16 weeks so it's not kicks or heavy bump keeping me up or waking me. I did go through a stage of being hungry at about 3am but nausea stopped me from eating.

Tonic water helped me to start with but can't stomach it now.

HaichM · 09/07/2017 19:29

Dead: I've been really hungry at that time of the morning but usually either felt too tired, nauseous or lazy to get up for a snack.

Sadie: sorry you've had to join us but glad we can be here to support you

Hi guys
I am In ondansetron constipation hell. Had to resort to a gloved hand and Vaseline! Any tips for anything that works?!
Getting desperate...

flossyfloss · 09/07/2017 20:44

Hpg I tried lots of fresh orange juice when it happened to me and it works. Or try glycerin suppositories x

LucindaE · 09/07/2017 20:54

Sadiebrolly Welcome. Sorry you are suffering. I'll add you to the due dates list. it is possible to have Hyperemesis without much vomiting - can you manage enough liquids? As you are a veteran, I don't need to say my usual spiel about kesostix and ice lollies and flat full sugar coke and the juice of tinned fruit.
Mustang I've just looked up the symptoms of that - never heard of it before - and it sounds truly awful.
HGpg Ask for lactulose. There's another I can never remember.
DeadDoorPost Root beer. Ah; HGpg that might help!

Oh Lucinda iv never wished for a magic wand more in my life. Iv been in tears with him on several occasions I know it doesn't help but it's just awful, he is such a happy wee guy normally. I really want to take him to docs tomorrow but it's so contagious and there really is very little they can do but if I could get something to numb his mouth a little it might help.

Not to scare you HG but nothing worked for me and knew I was on the same rd as Holly to impaction so I had to stop them, took about 48hrs to get a decent bowel movement then once I felt a bit better just started it again. I luckily had stemetil and cyclizine to take which kept the vomiting under control a little. I hope you get something that's works as it's miserable.

Melleebacca · 09/07/2017 22:36

Hgpg - licorice? Prunes? And lactulose daily. I'm too far along now that I can't have ondansetron anymore because the constipation and piles are made a billion times worse from the gigantic baby in my belly. So have to deal with nausea instead.
Baths have also helped loosen up the muscles down there...

Sadie - nausea is so much worse than the vomiting. The vomiting always gave me a few minutes of relief from the nausea. Get some meds and rest as much as possible.

Mustang - that sounds awful. It's so much harder to look after the wee ones when you're under the weather too. I hope it clears up quickly for him.

Almost completely healed here, but baby is so low I don't know how I can make it another 6 weeks. Nausea is a constant prescence too.

Lemondrop99 · 09/07/2017 23:04

HG, what do you think the problem is? I think there's two kinds of constipation. One is where your stools are too hard (due to dehydration, lack of fibre etc). If you have this problem then lactulose, Fibregel, prunes etc can help.

Howe et the problem I had was that ondanstron stopped my guts pushing. So it all just sat there for a week, waiting for directions Hmm Stool softeners did nothing to help, neither did all the straining in the world (bad idea! Don't do it!)

I can completely sympathise and I'm afraid latex gloves got me through about three months of this. It was literally the only thing that help. I really do sympathise, it's terrible and some days I wondered if I might prefer the sickness.

You can ask your GP for a stimulant laxative which will make your bowels move. Both Holly and I had bisacodyl (although the cramps weren't very nice and I didn't find it very effective). You can also discuss pesseries.

God it's not sexy, this pregnancy thing, is it?!

Sadie, I had quite a bit of vomiting but the nausea alone is crippling, so please don't feel the need to play it down. Nausea can be awful.

pippanippa · 10/07/2017 07:40

Hi all, welcome to all the new people, and sorry to hear about the ill little one Mustang, I remember when DD had hand, foot and mouth and it was just horrible!

Had a great weekend, but predictably back to normal today. A TMI question, but has anyone ever vomited their dinner the next day? Happened to me this morning and was a particularly unwelcome surprise - didn't know food would sit in the stomach for 13hours!

Natsku · 10/07/2017 07:47

Agree that the nausea is worse than the vomiting, as its constant and really gets you down.

DeadDoorpost · 10/07/2017 07:55

@pippasnippa I've not personally done it but food can take 3 days to fully digest so it's something that can happen.

HaichM · 10/07/2017 08:36

Mellee: I know exactly what you mean about baby being low. Oh my poor pelvis. Baby loves to push downwards. I feel like a waddling whale. I'm down to my last 2 ondansetron but I think I'm going to miss a day and see if I can cope with the nausea. My constipation is varied - last weekend was awful but this week not so bad - but the low baby, regular back ache/tight feelings and BH all feel worse if I'm constipated. I'm just worried how the increased nausea might make things worse too but I suppose as long as I can manage to take DS to school, I can spend most of the morning/day lying down. I'm hoping it's just the morning I have to suffer through, since I only take one ondansetron anyway.

Lemondrop99 · 10/07/2017 08:38

Yes Pippa. It's gross. This was mostly when I was on ondansetron, but I've frequently been amazed how good I ate like 12 hours ago has just sat there waiting for a return.

Weird night and rubbish start to the day. Had some protracted weird dream where I insisted on moving into a tower (like a castle tower) but the baby's cot was too big to get up the stairs. Then I dreamt that I went on holiday to Sweden (?!) and forgot that I had my midwife appointment today. Cue me running all over trying to ring the hospital but with no luck. Woke up feeling strangely stressed.

Did actually wake up in time for my appointment, and had to chug a load of Lucosade at 8am for my glucose sensitivity test. Sadly it hit my stomach badly, came straight back and I had to start again Hmm Now I won't be ready in time for my blood test because I drank it too late. Sigh. Right, off to the hospital I go....

DeadDoorpost · 10/07/2017 08:50

Good luck with the hospital Lemon we're quite lucky at ours that we get given the sugary drink when we get to the hospital. Midwife was telling me about it at my last appointment.

I've been awake since 5am and deciding to go back to sleep now if I can. Stomach is feeling uncomfortable and I've been feeling a bit sick but I think it's coz I'm just so hungry. I'm not used to this 😂 I can't wait til my mum comes down for a week though so I can get her to cook for me. She won't mind as she lives 350 miles away and hasn't seen me since March. Besides, she gets to look after me which is something she always wanted to do so while it'll be her holiday she can also visit the beaches while I'm asleep. Win-win.

So tired though... fingers crossed I can nap for a bit...

Melleebacca · 10/07/2017 09:26

Haich - good luck with dropping the ondansetron. I find my nausea is at its worst directly after breakfast and after 1pm. I seem to be alright between 10am and 1ish.
Sorry to hear baby is giving you issues too. I managed to walk the dog and DD today and my leg muscles are now telling me I ran a marathon. This baby feels massive!

Lemon - sorry to hear about the glucose drink vomit. I was lucky enough to be allowed to wash my mouth out with water after it, and they had an armchair for me to laze in while I waited. Still felt like crap for the rest of the day tho.

Pippa - ondansetron closes the stomach valves, which means the food digesting process is slower, hence seeing your dinner the next day. Metachlorpromide acts in the opposite way, speeding everything quickly through.

Deaddoor - lovely that your mum is going to visit and look after you. Always nice to have help. I have my teenage sister arriving tomorrow, and she just loves DD, so I get a huge amount of rest time as they both ignore me and play.😊

pippanippa · 10/07/2017 09:29

Thanks Mellee, Lemon and Deaddoor, good to hear it's normal (although I'm not taking ondanestron, so must just be my stomach being lazy). Ugh, feel awful today, and have to travel tomorrow on a longish journey. Getting fed up of this. Apparently the only next step here is hospitalisation and steroids, which seems quite extreme (tried metochlopramide and that was no help either).

LucindaE · 10/07/2017 09:54

Melleebacca Has said everything I meant to say - so I'll only sound like a parrot on food returning undigested for Pippasnippa (and never worry about tmi on here - no such thing), sympathies over Lucozade vomit for Lemondrip and I hope her test went well anyway, how I am so glad DeadDoorPost's mother is coming to stay and look after her, etc etc. I can only say Mustang Can you ask your GP over the phone (to avoid infection by taking him in) if there is anything that can be given to toddlers for the pain of the mouth ulcers?
I do have a couple of general questions, probably silly. On glucose tests;do they detect a need for the glucose test via bloods, as though my grandmother was diabetic, my having pregnancy diabetes was never mentioned to me even as a possibility? and HaichMDid the medics say you have to give up Ondansetron at this point, because so many people on here seem to be on it until the end?
Not so hot today; that must be a relief for everyone.

Got my scan today and have survived the hour and a half journey to the clinic with no sickness!

Daffodil397 · 10/07/2017 17:13

Hello everyone, I've been gone from this thread such a while that a good few people must be enjoying a nausea and sick free life in the pink castle with their little ones by now, so several congratulations are probably overdue!
Just saw Lucinda's list and on one hand was like 'yey I'm now 5th in line, getting there! On the other- 'OMG I have a lot to do before baby comes and no energy......' ah well.
Now on maternity leave thank God, just have to go in for 1 more meeting on Wed. Hope you are all managing ok in the heat, I'm a sun-seeker when not pg but now hallucinating about cold winds, cloudy skies and rain showers. Next year knowing my luck that's what we'll get!!
Waves and virtual pats on the back to you all xx

LucindaE · 10/07/2017 18:22

Natsku Congratulations on scan.
Daffodil Welcome back. Sorry by the sound of your post that it sounds as if you are still suffering. Yes, many have gone over that fabled drawbridge, and I was thinking of you as I put up the list -- must have been telepathy.

OP posts:
pippanippa · 10/07/2017 20:18

Just realised I missed a whole page of posts earlier! Hope you're feeling better Flossy and that the scan went well Natsku.

Today was a write off, no food except a teeny tiny breakfast stayed down. I am starting to get impatient, as things seem to be getting worse, not better and I'm still not gaining any weight. My poor DH is suffering, I bit his head off for the awful crime of coming home 15 minutes later from work than he said (it honestly felt like a big deal at the time...). On the plus side we're travelling back to the UK this week, so at least if things get really bad and I have to go to hospital while we're home I might get the fabled ondanestron.

DeadDoorpost · 10/07/2017 22:07

Pippa dont worry too much about the weight gain. Im only putting some one slowly.. supposedly about now we're meant to start putting more on (after week 20) so maybe it'll start to happen. If the midwife is worried she'll say but you could always bring it up with her over the phone if you like.
Considering the Nhs website says most women put about 22lbs on in total during it... I hope not. I lost all that from being sick and would rather not be back there...

Mustang27 · 10/07/2017 22:43

Pippa if you get it and it agrees with you I can send you a full packet untouched for you to take. I'm never touching the stuff again lol. Look at all these models and gym fans that barely even look pregnant at 9 months and have a perfectly healthy baby. You guys will be fine even
If you don't get massive bumps, sometimes they are all fluid any way and that's crap. Look on the bright side potentially less stretch marks!!! And less baby weight to lose the other side. I know that's no consolation really, I'm sorry. Oh and second the biting heads off for no real reason,I'm all sorts of angry at the mo.

Spent the day in hospital and narrowly missed being admitted thanks to my wee ones hand foot and mouth. He screamed inconsolably for hours this morning and I couldn't take it anymore so took him straight to A&E as I thought he was starving and dehydrated. His blood sugar was extremely low and his ketones 4+. Feel like such a failure as iv been trying to make sure he was eating and drinking but impossible with a mouth full of ulcers causing him pain. Arghhhh!!! He then proceeded to dip some hobnobs in a glass of water and eat the cheese out a sandwich after a few hours of poking and prodding which is the first thing he has ate other than a couple of squares of chocolate for days Sad. Needless to say I'm exhausted and barely functioning but iv had a couple of days of just 2/3 vomits and only a little nausea here and there but unfortunately I think iv definitely caught his bug.

How did your scan go Natsku? Glad you managed the car journey.

Lemondrop99 · 10/07/2017 23:39

Oh dear Mustang, sounds like you've had a terrible day Sad I hope you both feel a bit better tomorrow.
