Is pre-ejaculate a viable cause of pregnancy?

Could I really be pregnant from pre-ejaculate or am I just overreacting? My period is late (although tests say negative so I'm guessing they're correct), we put condom on a bit later than usual but still before the main event. Chances of being pregnant are really slim right?

I think it is possible - it only takes one sperm .

PastysPrincess · 13/06/2017 23:27

Still possible as pre ejaculate does contain sperm.

Unacceptable · 13/06/2017 23:29

Absolutely possible.
Sperm gets you pregnant

AndNowItIsSeven · 13/06/2017 23:33

very unlikey as it doesn't contain sperm .

AndNowItIsSeven · 13/06/2017 23:34

Old sperm could still be in urethra but again unlikely.

LadyPug · 13/06/2017 23:45

Thanks everyone, period is probably just late isn't it? Are any tests particularly good at detecting early pregnancy or is it much of a muchness?

Yes it absolutely happened to me. The Dr laughed when I told her we'd been using the withdrawal method. And yes he ALWAYS pulled out in plenty of time. Lots of Pre swimmers though, and like a pp said,it only takes one.

Do people really not know this?? Did you have no sex Ed in school?

JuicyCake · 14/06/2017 00:21

Wondering the same today... Trying to get pregnant, optimal time at the moment. Unfortunately DH's willy gave up half way through. Hoping a small bit of man stuff made it...

LadyPug · 14/06/2017 00:30

Haha apparently no, some of us don't know it! Obviously I thought it might be possible but is it really plausible? Do people actually get pregnant this way? Looking at this forum it looks like they do! The poster who asked about vaginal contact, yes it was proper intercourse but withdrew and put condom on. Not really even withdrawal method as not close to ejaculation. Based on response here I think fair to say a possibility but pretty unlikely that I'm pregnant!

Yes people do get pregnant this way.
As my friend learned eventually after 3 (!) pregnancies, the withdrawal method is not a form of contraception.

DownWithThisSortaThing · 14/06/2017 01:04

Or should I say, not a very reliable method anyway. It's better than nothing I suppose, but it is very possible to get pregnant still, even if your partner pulls out early.

calimommy · 14/06/2017 06:19

First Response are the best to use, not digital, just the regular ones. 5 pregnancies (3 babies!) and it's always given me early +.

TheEagle · 14/06/2017 06:25

It only takes one sperm and pre-ejaculate contains sperm so it is possible.

If the tests are negative though you might just be a bit late.

Withdrawal method of contraception is risky!

AndNowItIsSeven · 14/06/2017 10:28

No it's does NOT contain sperm, that's a myth.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 14/06/2017 10:32

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3564677/

According to this medical article, pre-ejaculate contains sperm.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 14/06/2017 10:33

Withdrawal method is not contraception.

Gothbaby · 14/06/2017 10:57

What is it they say at school? ? the only hundred percent chance of not getting pregnant is not having sex! You may just have a late pregnancy but Pulling out isn't at all gonna stop you getting pregnant . It only takes 1 x

There was a sex ed type show years ago, a rugby team were tested for viable sperm in pre-ejaculate, I can't remember the exact results, but iirc quite a high percentage did have sperm there.

happymumof4crazykids · 14/06/2017 15:47

Yep I got pregnant with my fourth this way Blush

LadyPug · 14/06/2017 17:41

It's really interesting, I don't mind if we're pregnant btw, I would have properly protected if I did. We were thinking of trying for a second, just not this soon! I don't think of us as using the 'withdrawal method' we were just intimate and it happened and then after a few minutes went "ah we should probably put a condom on" so chances must be pretty slim. I'll keep you all posted!

Yes I did have sex Ed at school. Withdrawal method is never discussed though is it?
A friend of mine literally used WM for 5 years and then when she wanted to get pregnant they did it once without him pulling out and Bingo. So I thought that although it's considered risky it must be pretty safe as my friend must be very fertile and yet she's never had an accident.
Luckily we had wanted a baby in a couple of years so it was not a disaster for us at the time.
