Problems with not eating enough

Hello ladies, I've had horrible morning sickness throughout and most days I only manage 1500 calories or less. I'm 5ft 9 and 11 stone 13, I've gained 17lbs so far. I just worry on days like today that the baby will suffer because I haven't eaten much. I always drink about 4 litres of water a day.

Will my baby be okay? Any suggestions about what I can do to up my calorie intake when I'm vomiting

I experienced the same with all 3.pregnancies! All were born healthly over 8 pounds ! I suffered horrendous ms too couldnt keep anything down ..so in end just ate small portions , peppermint tea helped ..with my last pregnancy Gp prescribed tablets (bit like travel.sickness meds) to help me keep food down which helped . Once MS eased away got my appetite back . If youre really worried seek advice from.GP .

I wouldn't worry I'm 38 weeks tomorrow and have only gained about 16ibs in total. My midwife is not at all concerned, in fact she thinks it's great as too many people put far too much weight on. She said the placenta will always take what it needs for baby, even in a famine (but extreme but you know what I mean).

MamaTT · 04/06/2017 10:20

I'm 34 weeks and I've only put on 9lb. My BMI was 22 and booking in. Baby is measuring too small but the consultants have said that won't be due to diet. I eat around 1500-1600 cals a day and I'm still exercising.

ADuckNamedSplash · 04/06/2017 15:05

I'm 27 weeks and currently 3lb lighter than before I got pregnant! Like you - morning sickness throughout, but not as bad now as it was in the first trimester. I lost 16lb then and have regained 13 since.

hopsalong · 04/06/2017 16:21

I'm sure you'll be OK. I'm the same height as you and weighed less than that when I gave birth a month ago. Baby was just under ten pounds. I also had a lot of morning sickness but was a healthy weight for my height before I got pregnant and obviously had spare fat on me. I think it's really only a concern if you're underweight to begin with or if you can't keep fluids down or any carbohydrates (i.e. if you have high ketones in urine). If you're vomiting a lot then maybe buy the strips to test?

Baby will steal from you, so you will suffer, baby won't.

I was sick up to 16w and was lucky if I ate more than a biscuit and a yoghurt all day. I am 5ft and weighed 9stone at booking in. Actually lost about 8lb then managed to put it back after 16w but I only went up to 9stone 4lb through my pregnancy. I was told not to worry as my placenta had everything baby needed.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 04/06/2017 16:30

It's not related to baby growth. I've had 4 dc with iugr (weights ranging from 5lb-6lb 13oz) & questioned if my complete lack of appetite could be the reason (I ate 3 times a day with an occasional snack, just not huge amounts). I was told categorically not by my consultant, baby takes all it needs from your reserves. I've never put on more than 10lbs in any of my pregnancies. I'm 30 weeks with dc5 atm & am only about 3-4lb above my booking weight as I'm still being sick. The main thing to do is make sure what you are eating is nutritious Smile

FatOldBag · 04/06/2017 16:30

If you're gaining, and 17lbs seems average enough, although you don't say how far along you are, then baby should be fine. Your body will give your baby everything he needs first, so if you're able to grow him and put on weight he'll be doing fine.

Maiz7654 · 04/06/2017 16:31

I was worried about not eating enough because of sickness during my pregnancy. In the first trimester I lost a stone. My midwife said not to worry as baby will take what it needs from you regardless of it you eat or not. I only started gaining weight in last trimester and after baby was born I was a stone lighter than I was when I got pregnant. My little girl was over 7lb and born at 38 weeks.

SaS2014 · 04/06/2017 19:03

Best recommendation take a pregnancy multi-vitamin. I've had awful sickness for most of pregnancy and have previously had stomach surgery so done days in take is low. Midwife and obstiatrician recommended multi-vitamin. Saying between it and what I do manage baby will get all she needs. Flowers

Mymouthgetsmeintrouble · 04/06/2017 19:17

Dont worry baby will take all it needs from your reserves ive got hyperemesis and have lost over two stone im 27 weeks and have quite a bump and its measuring a little ahead but the weight loss is very apparent over the rest of my body

When I got pregnant I was a size 6 and weighed less than 7 stone
At full term I weighed just under 9 stone
I had HG for months I lost weight in the beginning
DS was born a healthy 8 lb 6oz
He is now a strapping 27 year old at 6 foot and his only health issue is hayfever
The same with DD, she was 7 lb 13 and her only health issue is eczema
Please don't worry, but if you are concerned you must speak to your midwife

KimmySchmidt1 · 04/06/2017 19:57

Are you 100% sure that under eating as well as exercising doesn't have any connection whatsoever to having an underweight baby? Sounds like the sort of thing it's worth changing just in case. Are you scared to put on weight?

17caterpillars1mouse · 04/06/2017 20:00

I woulfmt worry. Yes it's horrible but baby takes what they need don't worry. I had gained nothing by the time I have birth because I lost so much weight in the early days that by 38 weeks when DD was born id just got back up to pre- pregnancy weight

Andysgirl15 · 04/06/2017 20:45

Don't worry sweetie. With my DD I lost 6lbs in my pregnancy and with DS I lost 16lbs😲. Mine was a mental issue though (in pregnancy I have a voice that tells me everything I eat will poison my baby) so I stuck to bland foods that wouldn't make me sick which meant I rarely at. But like my GP says babies are parasites they will feed off anything you have, your body will feed baby any vitamin, fat etc stores you already have so u wouldn't worry but try to keep up with your pre-natals. On a happier note I have birth to 2 very healthy little babies despite my lack of food x

Lesley1980 · 04/06/2017 20:49

I had terrible HG & lost 2.5 stone with pregnancy. I couldn't keep food or water down. In the nicest possible way your baby is a parasite & you will suffer before they do.

Thanks ladies, all your messages are really reassuring. I'm 32 weeks so my weight gain is about average, but my 17lb weight gain I counted from 10 weeks onwards because I initially lost a stone. So I'm about +3lbs overall. I'm not so worried about it now, I just a worrier and my midwife only ever lectures me that I need to try to eat more
