Does c section usually equal vomiting?

This may seem like an unusual question, bear with me!

I know a lovely lady who is soon having a csection. Both of us are emetophobia (phobic of vomiting).

She is very anxious about her planned csection and that she will be sick and is finding horror stories of vomiting during csection.

I'm hoping that some of you could post on here your stories about a csection and how the likelihood is lower than she is concerned about.

I know that nothing is a dead cert in life but she's arranged to have anti sickness on iv and I wish I could do something to help quell her anxiety a little so I'm hoping this thread will do the job.

I had neither nausea or vomiting with my section.

Catminion · 02/06/2017 17:24

I had a c-section and didn't vomit. They give you anti sickness medicine anyway.

EpoxyResin · 02/06/2017 17:25

I was sick after, but I had an unprecedented reaction to the drugs by all accounts. They seemed concerned so I don't think it was in any way normal or expected.

I felt nauseous when they were stitching me back up, I told the theatre nurse and they adjusted my medication. Sickness went away immediately. Even if you do vomit, which isn't likely, you won't have any food in your stomach to come back up.

Hmmalittlefishy · 02/06/2017 17:27

No sickness from my c section. I felt hot and the lovely nurse gave me a cool flannel for my head
I was also itchy afterwards and had to ask for anti histamines which I think is common
Make sure your friend mentions it when going for the pre-op on the day

Krapom · 02/06/2017 17:27

Depends on how quickly your blood pressure drops under anaesthetic, and if it's too quick for the anti-sickness medicine to counteract. Mine dropped quickly and I was sick both times.

GruffaloSoldier · 02/06/2017 17:28

As soon as I felt sick in my emergency c section they put anti-sickness meds and I was fine very quickly.

I'm my second c section which was elective I didn't have sickness at all!

2014newme · 02/06/2017 17:28

No I didn't vomit

Erinys · 02/06/2017 17:28

I had an emcs with no vomiting at all. I get terrible morning sickness and retch when emptying relatively clean bins but was fine during surgery.

A couple of my friends had sections at a similar time and none of them were sick either.

myoriginal3 · 02/06/2017 17:29

I was desperately sick after, but like a PP the spinal block or whatever they did didn't agree with me either.
I had had tea and toast earlier in the day.

If she fasted for 24 hours, it may minimise the risk?

Catminion · 02/06/2017 17:29

From what I remember, I went for a pre op appointment the day before and they gave me Zantac to take the night before to avoid the chance of reflux. No sickness during op at all, either during or after.

allthingsred · 02/06/2017 17:29

I've had 3 c section & only vomited on my 3rd. Apparently a bad reaction to the anaesthetic

Cel982 · 02/06/2017 17:30

I've assisted at about 50 C-sections and don't recall anyone vomiting during it. Conversely, I vomited my way through two normal deliveries...

SparkyBlue · 02/06/2017 17:30

I actually did vomit but mine was an emergency one and I had already been in labour for several hours and just felt absolutely miserable.

Sandsnake · 02/06/2017 17:31

My BP dropped quickly in theatre. I was on the verge of being sick, told my wonderful anaesthetist who sorted it immediately. I was amazed! I was sick in recovery but have a tendency to do that when exposed to drugs, so doesn't mean it will happen to your friend. I would make sure that she tells the theatre staff about her phobia beforehand so they can be extra viligant.

Also, from what I've heard an awful lot of women vomit in labour so it may actually be that the section is best for her.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 02/06/2017 17:33

I vomited a few hours after my section. I put it down to the box of chocolates I ate to myself (on top of a full dinner) as soon as I was given the OK to eat. Staff were unconcerned. I was fine after.

Compare to my first delivery, hyperemesis, back to back labour, gas and air having no effect, epidural malfunctioning, and yes I was retching throughout and vomited (bile) several times.

Enjoy your section.

Caterina99 · 02/06/2017 17:35

I had an emcs and fairly bad reaction to the drugs. No vomiting. Although I did have shaking and was extremely cold.

I did throw up a couple of times during labour beforehand.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/06/2017 17:35

Projectile vomiting during labour. No vomit during the section.

toffeeboffin · 02/06/2017 17:36

I had an EMCS and had already eaten breakfast : they gave me an anti vomit pill.

With my second ELCS I was nil by mouth 12 hours pre op.

DaisyFranceLynch · 02/06/2017 17:38

I vomited after mine, when I was in the recovery room, but it was an emergency one after a long labour (during which I'd also been sick!)

I wasn't given anti-emetics and think that would have made a difference.

Libitina · 02/06/2017 17:39

It's not the section itself, it's the spinal anaesthesia that rapidly drops your blood pressure that causes the nausea and vomiting. They will be giving you drugs to stabilise your blood pressure and reduce the nausea.

DoorKnee · 02/06/2017 17:40

2 sections, one emcs one elective. No vomiting or nausea. I'm also emetophobic. I worried about taking morphine after for the pain, the midwife gave me half a dose to start with. Fine with that also. They do have anti emet drugs you can have though.

Kpo58 · 02/06/2017 17:40

I had no nausea or vomiting during my C-section. I hadn't eaten since the night before as I felt a little queasy (almost due for labour type). I didn't know that sickness during C-sections was a thing.

Northgate · 02/06/2017 17:46

My experience was that I vomited pretty much all the way through normal labour all 3 times - I think the contractions were setting me off.

But I had an emergency c-section with DC3, and no vomiting or nausea at all once they started with that.

OvO · 02/06/2017 17:46

I vomited after all 3 of my sections but I had a GA each time so it might have been a reaction to that.

I threw up the toast they'd made me. And everyone knows hospital toast is the best toast.
