Does c section usually equal vomiting?

This may seem like an unusual question, bear with me!

I know a lovely lady who is soon having a csection. Both of us are emetophobia (phobic of vomiting).

She is very anxious about her planned csection and that she will be sick and is finding horror stories of vomiting during csection.

I'm hoping that some of you could post on here your stories about a csection and how the likelihood is lower than she is concerned about.

I know that nothing is a dead cert in life but she's arranged to have anti sickness on iv and I wish I could do something to help quell her anxiety a little so I'm hoping this thread will do the job.

I did but it wasn't planned and I had been eating etc which isn't recommended. Actually I stuffed a flapjack in my mouth about twenty minutes after the section (greedy bastard) and the midwife ran over and grabbed it! 😂 I was then sick...😳 They gave me meds very quickly though and it didn't last!

EMCS, no vomiting before, during or after. I suspect they try very very hard to prevent you vomiting during the operation as you are basically strapped to a table on your back whilst they operate on your belly, you can't exactly roll over onto one elbow with a bucket. You have someone standing by your head the entire time watching your vital signs and adjusting the medication to keep you comfortable, so you could tell them if you started to feel sick and they'd give you something to stop it.

With my second section I had severe nausea for a minute or two when my blood pressure dropped but the anaesthetist adjusted everything and I was fine within seconds. My first section had no nausea or sickness.

Seeing with both I had shit loads of medications, terrible health complications and generally felt awful throughout pregnancy the c-section was a blessed relief as it was so straightforward.

stealthbanana · 02/06/2017 17:52

I had an emcs and no vomiting, but I did vomit up several bottles of Powerade during the pushing part of my failed natural labour immmediately preceding the section Grin

BelligerentGardenPixies · 02/06/2017 17:54

I vomited several hours after my first EMC because I ate too soon (I was starving having been in labour for 40 hours and having only had a banana in all that time).

Didn't vomit or feel nauseous in the three subsequent c-sections though, but they were planned and had anti nausea meds and didn't eat till after the recommended time.

I have emetophobia too and was very anxious about this. I was worried about being sick during labour and spent several, (very unhelpful), hours scouring the internet for positive and negative stories. I ended up having a planned c section as my baby was breech. My advice would be to share your fears and be totally honest with the anaesthetist and midwife about how severely this affects you, (I know this can be really difficult). They were so kind to me once I explained how I was feeling. They can give you stronger anti sickness medication very quickly if you start to feel ill during surgery. They also made sure that I had the same medication written up on my chart for afterwards. I really hope that your friend will be alright. I know how it feels to have a time that should be so happy and exciting overshadowed by anxiety.

No sickness from me! I had an EMCS & the team were amazing. If I ever had a second child I would have a planned section as I found labour until that point very hard & vomited in early labour due to the pain!

Lules · 02/06/2017 18:14

Had huge amounts of vomiting in labour but none by the time I had the EMCS.

BusterGonad · 02/06/2017 18:14

I felt really sick during the operation, I told the doctors/nurses as they did tell me to let them know as soon as I felt sick, they popped some medicine in and I felt fine. I did feel sick after, then I felt ok (maybe an hour later) and I had a cup of tea and biscuit then I was sick all down myself! Sorry Op but I can't lie! By if I didn't have the tea and biscuit I would've been fine!

DuggeeHugs · 02/06/2017 19:34

No sickness at all with my EMCS. I told the anaesthetist the moment I felt a bit nauseous and he had the anti-emetic in within seconds. Felt better straightaway and no other problems during or after (DH is an emetophobe so this was just as well!)

Reastie · 02/06/2017 19:36

Thank you for the positive stories coming in :)

I had two, no puke either time.

Sparrowlegs248 · 02/06/2017 19:53

I was sick a lot before mine, but it was down to a pre existing medical condition which results in my blood pressure and heart rate plummeting. The spinal set it off on a grand scale. But that's unlikely to happen to her.

eurochick · 02/06/2017 19:53

I puked in recovery, several times. It was the most painful thing ever. I thought it was quite common but maybe not.

WellErrr · 02/06/2017 19:54

I have quite bad emetophobia and have had three sections. Leading up to a curing them I'm ashamed to say that one of my main fears and questions was 'will it make me sick?'

Be totally upfront with your midwife and anaesthetist. They can give you anti-emetics, and medication to raise your blood pressure. Have anti emetics before you start (ask and they will give), then every time you feel slightly nauseous, say so straight away and they will give you more meds. You have a line in so they do it instantly and it works instantly.

As long as you are totally upfront about it and make sure they understand that it's a real issue for you you should be fine.

I have a massive vomiting phobia and threw up lots during my first natural labour so with a planned c section I was even more concerned I would be sick. I spent months worrying. Anyway, on the day of the op I told all of the staff about my phobia and they were amazing. They gave me extra anti sickness meds before hand, think they gave more IV ones during the op and gave me some afterwards and I felt absolutely fine throughout. I even ate toast an hour after the op even though they recommended I didn't because I was so hungry after not eating for 16 hours and I still didn't feel sick.
Then I was worried about the pain killers after making me sick. I had paracetamol, ibuprofen and dihydrocodein, all of these I was fine with. I declined the oramorph as was worried morphine would make me sick.
Overall was a really positive experience.

Theducksarenotmyfriends · 02/06/2017 19:57

No nausea or vomiting at all and I'm allergic to anti sickness drugs so didn't even have that.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 02/06/2017 19:59

No nausea or vomiting here either. I've had 2 sections.

TheLegendOfBeans · 02/06/2017 20:01

Not at all love and I'd chinned about 10 (srsly) slices of toast and marmite just befure they came to me and told me I'd be getting a CS at 4pm that day. It was 0759 😂

FreeWeezy · 02/06/2017 20:01

I vomited just before they started. But once I was finished there was no nausea. I was fine afterwards as well.

NerrSnerr · 02/06/2017 20:01

I have had two sections. The first one I was sick afterwards, caused by having a haemorrhage. The second one I had HG during the pregnancy but wasn't sick during or after the surgery.

AllTheGoodNamesAreTaken260709 · 02/06/2017 20:03

I have had 2, I felt very nauseous and was sick after the first one but not the second. After the second section I told the midwife I felt sick and she gave me an anti sickness injection, I felt fine after that.

Smellybluecheese · 02/06/2017 20:06

No nausea or vomiting here. Did get terrible shakes though.

MamaHanji · 02/06/2017 20:19

No sickness during c section. I did throw up after though. But that was only when they made me get out of bed 3 hours after being cut in half.

Pallisers · 02/06/2017 20:21

I had a vaginal birth for my first. I vomited constantly from the very first contraction to the moment of giving birth (at this point was just heaving as nothing left) Midwife said it was something that happened sometimes. Brutal.

I then had 2 c-sections with no nausea and no vomiting.
