X ray in early pregnancy?

I am currently in the hospital waiting room, I broke my shoulder a while back and need to have a check up. They want me to have an X-ray but I've just found out I'm 3-4 weeks pregnant. I told them I don't want to do it, can they force me?

Let them know and they will advise you accordingly, if chronic problem they might not be too bothered and wait. No one can force you to do anything though, your choice x

It is your choice but if they know you are pregnant they will use an "apron" to cover your tummy and the risk is very low. I had several x-rays during pregnancy without covering (I didn't know I was pregnant) and the baby was fine. I had to go through a risk assessment though and the radiation from one x-ray (especially in a different area) is very low.

They can't force you, but should clearly explain what your options are. If they're not forthcoming, just ask, 'What are the alternatives to not having an x-ray today? Can you go through the advantages and disadvantages of each? I want to make an informed decision for my unborn child and myself.' Hopefully they'll understand and won't give you grief!!

Hi I had an X-ray while I was 28 weeks pregnant and they used an apron to cover my belly as pp said. Baby was perfect. I agree you should ask what your alternatives are, although the risk is quite low

Thanks ladies. It was only a tiny hairline break and I can now use my arm/shoulder fine so I'm hoping they won't push for the X-ray. I do feel a bit calmer thank you x

You can refuse but if they're doing a shoulder X-ray then your baby won't be in the X-ray beam so there's nothing to worry about :)

Just left the hospital, the X-ray wasn't necessary as I regained full movement of my shoulder so they discharged me.

If they change their mind and want you to have an x ray they can cover your tummy with a lead apron to help protect the baby. I worked in x ray and have done this. Glad it's all ok
