Hi guys I am nearly 5 weeks pregnant, I have my first midwife appointment booked for when I am 9 weeks. What can I expect from my first appointment? I've been told it's an hour long just not sure how much or what I will be doing for an hour! Thanks

Medical history, Family medical history, partners family's medical history, previous pregnancies and gyn history.

Peeing in a tube. Blood test. Weigh-in. Selecting a preliminary plan for place of birth. Booking you in for scan.

Dietary advice, lifestyle advice, referral to services e.g. Stop smoking, etc

Some of the questions will be very personal, particularly those regarding your living arrangements. Don't be freaked out by them, they're really standard.

And yes it really does take an hour to go through all the stuff

Even if the scan booking doesn't occur there and then but is triggered by the electronic file being created.

Yes they do ask some unusual things like 'is the father a blood relative?' and when they do the blood test they test you for HIV, some of it can seem a bit odd but I suppose there's always somebody out there who the answer to these questions is yes so they just have to treat everybody the same

Also they do a carbon monoxide test.

At my very first midwife appointment I was asked whether I planned to breastfeed or bottlefeed. It was not something I had ever given any thought to before and naively I hadn't realized I could have any kind of choice about it!

arbrighton · 21/05/2017 17:30

I didn't have a carbon Monoxide test @oysterbabe

But given how different areas seem to be in their approach towards anything to do with pregnancy, I'm somehow not surprised....

arbrighton I didn't do carbon monoxide tests with pregnancy 1 or 2 but I did with number 3.

They will also ask you about domestic violence and any previous pregnancy (including abortions). It's a standard question but if someone is with you they might ask them to leave before they ask.
