Hi ladies.

So I'm booked in to have the sweep tomorrow & feeling quite anxious about it...

Can anybody share their success stories & what exactly happens? Hmm

Thanks x

I had three sweeps with dd1. Sadly not successful.

I can only liken it to the heavy handedness of a "handsy" teenage boyfriend... if you catch my drift.

It's uncomfortable but not overly painful. And you can bleed a little afterwards. Midwife forgot to tell me and I shat myself with fear when I got home Blush

I had a sweep with DD. Labour 24 hours later x

raviolidreaming · 09/05/2017 17:17

I declined one as everything I read suggested that they are only effective if your cervix is viable and you'd go into labour anyway.

Thecomfortador · 09/05/2017 17:24

I had a sweep at about 3pm and baby arrived before 9 pm. But I was already 2 cm and having contractions every few minutes. I like to think the sweep sped it up.

It was painless, and took a few seconds if I remember rightly. She said it was successful as soon as she did it.

Bethany0903 · 09/05/2017 17:36

I had a sweep in the morning and went into labour 5 hours later

Topsyloulou · 09/05/2017 17:39

I had three sweeps over 10 days with DS & nothing, it was uncomfortable but not painful. I ended up being induced & once the pessary came out I had another sweep, that one was particularly uncomfortable, felt like she was having a right old root around. It worked though & 2 hours later my contractions started & my waters broke.

I think the teenage boy heavy handedness is the best description I've ever seen of a sweep Grin

For me it was more an uncomfortable situation, than an uncomfortable procedure. My baby's head isn't engaged though so it didn't do anything, apart from confirm his position.

Good luck Smile I hope it works

BlahBlahBlahEtc · 09/05/2017 20:59

I had 2 sweeps, a bit uncomfortable in a period cramp kind of way but otherwise fine. Didn't work though.

Alexandra87 · 09/05/2017 21:17

It's about as uncomfortable as having a smear. Did nothing for me I was already 1cm dilated and still had to be induced

calimommy · 10/05/2017 04:57

I've had two. Once in an effort to start labour and once when labour had already started. Not sure why she did it then, I had just arrived at hospital, she was checking how far dilated I was and did a quick sweep as well.

calimommy · 10/05/2017 04:58

Sorry I meant to add, they are fine. Don't worry about it. Not painful, more just an odd sensation.

OVO1410 · 10/05/2017 05:00

DC1: Had two sweeps, was 2-3cm dilated at the last one and 42 hours later regular contractions began.

DC2: Had three sweeps, was 2cm dilated at the last one and 12 hours later regular contractions began.

I have long early labours and like to think that the sweeps speed things up a bit. I find them only mildly uncomfortable and usually have some light bleeding afterwards. Good luck.

I had a sweep by my consultant at 38+6. Sweep at 4pm, went into labour straight away. Waters went at about 11pm. Back at hospital by 2am. DS born at 6am.

I've heard that or brings labour forward by 48 hours if you're ready. If you're not it won't do anything.

My DSis had one at 10am. Went into labour at midnight.

Mine was uncomfortable but bearable. I bled afterwards, wear a sanitary towel or maternity pad.

OhDearToby · 10/05/2017 06:39

I had a sweep with dd2. It was done at 40+4 at 11.30am and she was born at 9.20pm that day. Also that day I walked 7 miles, 1.5 miles of that was straight after the sweep.

To be fair I think I was already in v early labour when I had it done so i think it sped things up but we'd have got there soon anyway.

glitterglitters · 10/05/2017 14:12

Lol @rose7120 you made my day Grin

Dottie39 · 10/05/2017 14:16

I had a sweep, midwife 'knocked' something or 'hit' something, began bleeding quite badly for the next few hours. Got rushed to hospital and induced, was all a bit scary. Never found out what went wrong or why the sweep caused me to bleed. Everything turned out well though, although I would never have a sweep again as not only was the whole thing quite terrifying, induction was awful and painful!

Dottie39 · 10/05/2017 14:18

Shit just read that you asked for success stories, I'm so sorry. Well it was successful in that the baby was delivered soon after... 😳

kel1493 · 10/05/2017 20:07

Hi, I hope it went okay for you?
I had one as I was overdue.
It didn't hurt me at all. I didn't feel an thing. No pain after either.

Chamonix1 · 11/05/2017 07:17

Had a sweep with dd1, I was 1 week overdue. As soon as I stood up afterwards I could tell it had worked. Early labour started half an hour later.

Chamonix1 · 11/05/2017 07:18

Yes, it did hurt. The lady who did it said she "could feel baby's head" so I can imagine why!

AmyG87 · 11/05/2017 08:22

Hi ladies

Well I had the sweep yesterday & nothing has worked. Confused I found it to be extremely uncomfortable so I suppose everybody is different.

God help me in labour if I didn't like the sweep! X
