How long can I stay 2cm dilated for?!

On Monday I had irregular contractions and pains, midwife checked at 3pm and said I was 1/1.5 cm dilated. Went to hospital (no rush), was seen at around 9 and they said that I hadn't gotten anymore dilated so I was fine to go home (they did other tests but everything was fine). When I got home, I was in a lot of pain in my top (?) back and stomach, was being sick etc, so we called the midwife and she came to check on me (this was at about 2am) and examined me again. I was 2cm by that point and she said she thought it'd be wise to sleep for a few hours (for energy) as things would be moving on quicker afterwards. Since then, I've had lower back pain, but it's not as painful and it's like a period pain but not unbearable or at the point where I feel the need to take something for it. I did have a few stomach pains yesterday but nothing major. TMI warning (I did warn you), I've had loose bowels, but no signs of a show, plug or waters breaking. How much longer can I stay like this for?? I just want it to be over with Sad first baby, 38+6 (if that helps) Sad

This has been me for 3 weeks. You can stay 2cm for weeks. With my 1st i stalled at 1cm for 3 days, but my waters had broken so i had a drip to help. It sounds like your body is just getting ready, true labour no way can you sleep through it. One day it will start full on and progress :)

I think if you click report and ask mums net HQ they'll move it. And to answer your question - unfortunately latent phase up to 3-4cm can go on for days. Hang in there. Rest and try to distract yourself.

With my first, I was 2-3cm on the Tues, waters broke and went into labour the wed night. With overdue second I was 2cm for ages (like a week as I kept requesting sweeps to get things moving). Don't remember with third but his waters went before I had any niggles and then I started proper contractions about 10 hours after.
Good luck.

I was 2 cm at 37 weeks, had my little boy on Friday at 39+3. I was having tightenings too, depending on how regular they are determines how quick you dilate (I think, that's what my doctor said anyway) x

Ooh exciting! Congratulations, you're nearly there (I know it probably doesn't feel like it).

This kind of lead up can go on for daaaays. I was in pre-labour for six days with DD1 and for three days with DD2. But once things got going both were quite quick and relatively easy, straightforward births.

If it's stop start it's often the baby trying to get into a good position, so try to rest and if you can manage it do some walking and hip circling and so on to help the baby get into a good cervix-pressuring spot. I also found baths and the TENS machine very helpful.

Good luck! Flowers

It can take days, even weeks in some cases, to get to 4cm (active labour). As long as your waters don't go and baby is moving around as normal there is no need to be worried. Hopefully it won't be long for you op Flowers

Couple of weeks! However sounds like not long for for you now. Good luck!
