Has someone refused to be induced on EDD because baby is small but no obvious problems?

Like the title says really. My baby measured on 9th centile after latest growth scan.

There are no obvious problems except that she is a little bit smaller.

I have been signed up for induction on the due date but are very confused if that is really necessary.

Why do they want to induce you on EDD ? Just because your baby is small ?

Is the baby growing at all between growth estimates ? If it is small and not growing then that is a slightly different scenario to small but growing. There could be all sorts of reasons for poor growth , including but not necessarily an inefficient placenta, if it was me I would rather deliver on edd with a planned cs rather than risk continuing and hoping for a late growth spurt (unlikely!). Any chance your dates are wrong?

Yes and yes! Baby is growing just under 10th centile since 30 weeks. I'm 37+4 today.

She has been following her own curve ever since.

Fluids, blood flows, placenta and cord all appears to be normal.
Heart rate and movements have been OK so far too.

I'm not trying to be a rebel here but I feel a bit confused that they want to induce just because she is small.

I also understand they do not want to take any unnecessary risks neither do I but I feel like I would like to refuse it but don't want to play with something that important either.

Also, she is IVF baby and IVF date is 4 days later. But because she measured 4 days ahead on 12 week scan NHS goes by that date rather than IVF.

I was induced twice in similar circumstances l. Looking back I wish I had refused and waited to see if natural labour would happen but I was so fed up of being pregnant by that stage I accepted the induction.

I'm sure your baby is absolutely fine, especially if she's following the curve! I welcomed an induction as my daughters growth was slowing down, but even then she was fine just very diddy. I personally liked the convenience of being induced It was also very quick for me and she was born a few hours after so it worked out quite well for me. If you feel you don't want to be induced though, it's entirely your choice. They can only advise you! But I do think there is no real reason for them to want baby out early if all of your Doppler readings are fine and baby is remaining on curve. Go with what makes you feel comfortable, if they had real concerns I'm they probably wouldn't wait til your due date and would want baby out as early as possible. Good luck x

Thank you for your replies. She still has got 2.5 weeks to decide if she wants to make her way out herself.

I generally trust doctors and probably will go with the induction but part of me is disappointed that it will not be natural, particularly when there is no "real" reason.

So they are inducing you at 40 weeks? So even if your dates are off by 4 days she would still be over the 38 weeks considered full term.

She'll be fine! I would just be excited to see her sooner than planned!

Yes, at 40 weeks. I know it would be full term and all that. It's just that induction doesn't seem "right".

Having said that I would not put her well being or mine at risk and would go ahead with it. Not trying to loose it at all costs but thee is a part in me that is just not very happy with it either.

Well I think inductions are crap but if you do get one, do get the epidural as well. I've had an induced labour and and natural labour and the induction is unnaturally painful in my opinion.
On your other topic, I was induced on EDD for the same reason, small baby. In the end it was the right thing because I did have clots in the placenta which were preventing him from getting some nutrients, but not all, which is why his growth didn't disappear but slowed. He was a skinny baby alright! He was 6 lbs and very long so it made him look even skinnier!! So he was better off out than in, so I could start feeding him breast milk!
To be honest I was happy to be induced because I was so fed up being pregnant by then that I didn't mind. But I was happy that I didn't need an induction with my second and hopefully I won't need another this time. My second was early (37+4 but weighed 7.5lbs so he was done in my opinion and I was also taking aspirin during that pregnancy) I hope this baby grows just as well.

Thank you for your reply. That is very interesting about clots. I haven't read or heard about that and knowing that there might be something like that does encourage me to go ahead with the induction. She also appears to be very tall. Her FL is on the 90th centile.
