Scan at 6+2 but no heart beat and small for age

Hello,

So, technically I am 6+2 pregnant, but, as my cycles are 30 days, and I am sure I ovulate later than normal (I didn't get a BFP until my af was 7 days late, and that was using a FRER) I think I'm closer to 5 on the dot.

As I have had 2 mc in the past, I was able to have an early scan today. The sonographer said said everything was fine, but it was too small to see anything - couldn't detect a heartbeat, and it measured at 3.3mm.

When I went to speak to the midwife to decipher the results, she said that it was possible that the baby had stopped growing at 5wks, and that I was going to MC. I was given blood tests to measure HCG levels and am awaiting the results. But she didn't seem very positive that everything would be ok.

Has this happened to anyone else and the baby has been ok?

I have to wait two weeks until I can have another scan and see if the baby has grown at all :(

Just answered my own questions, but posting in case anyone else has similar worries.

Blood tests show pregnancy was consistent for 5wks, so everything is potentially ok.

Sounds as if all is OK to me. If your cycle is normally 30 days and you only got your BFP a week later, i.e. on cycle day 37, then you must have ovulated a lot later than someone like me, who was able to get a BFP around cycle day 22/23 (8 days after ovulation). Did you get negative tests before that? I think you can take the first day of the positive test as being roughly 3.5/4 weeks and so it would be weird if you were more than 5 weeks now!

Hi size - good news. I have a whole saga around this - only found a gestational sac last week - measured a week behind my dates (was pretty sure of them). Today they found a tiny embryo (2mm) and a heartbeat. It measures under 6 weeks. I think there is a big margin for error on these early scans. Are you having a follow up?

sizeofalentil · 26/04/2017 16:23

hopsalong - Yes, got negative tests 4 days before expect period, 1 day after expected period and 4 days AFTER expected period.

I normally get ovulation pain + implantation pain, so worked out that it probably implanted a few days before I got the BFP.

So was pretty sure of what the dates were this time around. Which is annoying that that info wasn't taken in to account before being told that the fetus has probably died. Just feel like she didn't have to actually say that, you know?

biginjapan - So sorry went through this too. So stressful huh? Yes, follow up in 2wks - on my husband's birthday. Which he is delighted by, but has made me even more nervous that it should be good news.

I've been listening to a Paul McKenna relaxation tape on loop to try and calm down. It really works, if anyone needs it!

Hi OP. Not quite the same but I was pretty certain of my dates. Exact 28 day cycles and used OPK. Had a scan at 6+1 and no hb and measured 5+5 (or something, can't even remember now). They didn't seem hugely concerned though. Went back 2 weeks later and measured spot on for my dates and everything normal.

I think at that stage everything is so tiny that the smallest difference can change the results by a day. And if you know you ovulated later anyway then that helps account for it a bit. Good luck and I know that wait is horrible!

TeaAndPjs · 27/04/2017 12:07

I went for a scan at 6+3 and measured smaller, went back 2 weeks later at 8+6 ( but know I'm a week out cos of late ovulation) and was measuring bang on 6 weeks but there was a heartbeat, back next week to check for progress but as there was peigress between 1st 2 acan the sonographer wasnt worried :) hope all works out ok for you

Two weeks is such a long time to wait at this stage, my sympathies! Would they not even do 2x bloods 48 hours apart? Meanies.

It definitely sounds like the dates could just be incorrect, but it's really impossible to tell without two points of data to compare the growth rate. Everything seems bang on for 5 weeks from what you've said, so fingers crossed. I should think you could be cautiously hopeful. I think sometimes they choose their comments in order to balance your mood Confused so if you look too happy and confident they try to prepare you for the worst, and if you look worried they go all positive thinking on you!

If this happens again (and I hope this one is sticky so it doesn't have to!) ALWAYS lie and say your period was exactly 14 days before your ovulation date if you know it. Because despite being experts on women's reproduction apparently no obstetrician or midwife is in any way convinced that a cycle can ever vary from 14 day ovulation Confused

It doesn't matter about lying because they change your due date based on the scan later anyway.

I've had this. This is my 5th pregnancy, 3rd baby: 6 week us measured 5 weeks, empty sac no yolk. 8 week us measured 7+2, foetal
pole and heart beat. 10 week us measured 9+3. 12 week us measured 12 weeks. All going well so far, now 21 weeks.

sizeofalentil · 11/05/2017 12:52

Follow up to this: had at scan at what technically should have been 8wks.

Embryo/fetus/whatever I should call it had a heartbeat and was measuring in at 6wks+5, which is round about the mark I thought I was at due to late ovulating etc.

Everyone said it seems fine and healthy, so feel like I have jumped this first hurdle.

Just got to hang on now, and hope it sticks.

Thank you so much for all your help, support and stories. Made me feel more human and less stressed.
