Hi everyone. I'm 7 weeks pregnant, and already have a 2 year old DD. My first pregnancy was awful and I suffered very badly with nausea and sickness and was prescribed a number of meds, including phenargen. I've just started to go downhill in this pregnancy, and organised one of this online doctors appointments. The doctor I spoke to was horrified I was considering using phenargen and said it was unsafe as it was a sedative. Does anyone have any current knowledge on this? I recall it really helping last time....

Excuse my language, but what crap!

Promethazine/phenargen along with cyclizine are antihistamines and considered some of the safest most evidenced antiemetic drugs for use in pregnancy.

I'm currently on this (in combination with odansetron - which was slightly more contravertial) and have been for most of my pregnancy. Yes, it zonks me right out but that doesn't make it unsafe.

  1. See a different GP
  2. Check out the Pregnancy Sickness Support website

Really hope you manage to get help early this time.

I've been using it. No-one's been worried prescribing it for me. I tried a couple of others first but they didn't work. I think it's a pretty routine drug to give.

Hmm I didn't think it was still available. I was prescribed it in 70s for allergies. My mum said it caused me to hallucinate! Certainly knocked me out.

Is it one of those medicines called safe because it's really old and therfore they know more about it?

My GP prescribed it to me for pregnancy related sleep issues.
