Growth Scan; Potentially large baby

Today I had a growth scan... I'm 28 weeks and they measured a 3.7lb baby.

Average is 2.54....

I had a 10lb 11 baby and everything in that region is a ok! Don't panic

They told me I was having a small baby, then they said he was going to be large so I needed an extra scan.

He actually weighed 7lbs 10oz. They were wrong on both counts, it happens a lot.

I am 28 weeks also and had scan Tuesday and measurements are large and weighs 3lb 6! So in the same boat. I am worried about a large baby as my first was 9lb10 so I know his one is going to be a 10lber!!
Just want to know if hey are thinking of intervening early or not. So I can sympathize with your concerns. Have you got any follow up scans or tests? X

My first was 10lb 10 and the pelvic floor survived! I've got my 28 week growth scan next week so will be expecting another big baby!

Have you been tested for Gestational Diabetes? Generally early induction is only recommended if the size is related to GD.

Also worth thinking whether you'd want an ELCS - current advice is that it should be considered where the baby is predicted to be over 5kg/11lb.

(I have just had a 10lb 7oz baby by ELCS as he was predicted 11lb+)

I had lots of growth scans and was tested for gestational diabetes as I was told I was having a monster baby. At the very end of my pregnancy I saw a consultant who said she thought there had probably been a dating error. My baby was born a few days later weighing a very manageable 8lbs 12. My pelvic floor is very much intact! Try not to worry too much as growth scans are notoriously unreliable

11lb 14oz here (11 days late but would still have been huge on EDD I guess) and both my DS and my pelvic floor are absolutely fine. :o

I may have been induced earlier or sent for CS if they'd known (doctor actually felt my tummy on the day he ended up arriving and guessed 9lb) but it was really fine, way easier than my first labour.

They reckon I developed GD - I had the test at 28wks but it's possible I developed it after, he had low blood sugar etc.

I'm expecting my 3rd now 7 years on, and have been told I'll need growth scans this time because of DS' size. I may be induced at 37 weeks so they don't let this one get as big. And will possibly have a later GD test too.

Oh and everyone kept telling me I wouldn't be able to feed him myself either (I did) and that he'd end up massive as a child (he's not - 50th centile for weight and 75th for height). There are a lot of misconceptions about big babies but honestly don't worry

Omg they told me this too and my GS with my 1st. I was crapping myself!!

He came out on time and 6lbs 3oz

Scan at 36 weeks- told baby was 8lb 13, with head circumference off the chart.
Induced at 38 weeks- baby was 7lb 3oz.
Take measurements with a pinch of salt. Yes some babies are big, but they don't KNOW - try to enjoy pregnancy and not stress.

Yes I have two more scans booked as they are monitoring something else.

I've already been listed as potentially being induced due to the other thing... the doc today said that they'd monitor the future scans so that they can make a call. If baby gets too big it'll be a sunroof job. Or induced early. So basically I have no idea!!

Mother was smug "I said you were big...!" Alright'''

Good to know others were fine though! SIL had two huge babies, so I'm definitely blaming DH and his genes...

Sorry ladies - I'd written the last pos and it only just updated whilst I was working - just refreshed to find all of your tales of sizing. Seems like sprog could end up any size at all!

Also being tested for GD next week, something about a large stomach... but I'm sure it's all fine.

No wonder i feel tired though...

Yeah I've got GD test Sunday as babies stomach is also off the scale but my first dd stomach was the same. I don't have any more scans as yet so will just wait and see. When I mentioned about having a big baby before the measurements were found my midwife said " you've done 9lb 10 naturally you can do a 10lb+" great just what I wanted to hear!
Everyone's mentioned how big I look and you just feel like ignoring it. Anyway big babies are more cuddly!!!

Just about the GD....big baby doesn't always mean diabetes. I was tested for my first and didn't have it even though I had polyhydrominos and she was 10lb 10. This one was measuring big at the week scan and again my GD test was negative.
I was 9lb 14 and my husband was over 9lb and we're both tall so we never expected teeny babies! Consultant said it's often genetic!

Oh and, in my experience, big babies sleep for longer! Bigger tummies take more food and can go for longer!

I was told I was having a small 7lb baby even though I measured slightly over on fundal height. He ended up weighing 11lb 9 oz 12 days overdue.

I ended up making a complaint (very long story) about my treatment and was told even the most experienced obstetrician would struggle to accurately identify the weight pre-birth. it always puzzles me that they can talk as though everything is the gospel truth but put a complaint in and they change their tune.

vfoster - I was exactly the same, big baby, polyhydromonis. Had four rounds of testing for GD and nothing found! The doctors were obsessed with finding a 'reason' why the baby was so big and generally scared the crap out of me by obsessing over it and pulling faces over my scans. He's just a big baby!

Bubbinsmakesthree same here! First pregnancy they were obsessed but this one they are just expecting it! Both sonographer and consultant said it made sense when they saw my 6"5 husband This time around 😂

Vfoster - What is polyhydromonis? Wasn't mentioned today? I reckon I wont have GD too...

Thought myself and DH are all very average in height. 5"5 and 5"10, he's fairly muscular though. Could be just a well built one like DH I suppose. THought looking at pics he was actually quite skinny as a kid!

I was small. but mother soked, drank coffee... carried on as normal for back then!

Polyhydrominos means having more fluid around the baby than 'normal'. It can be a complication but everything was straightforward for me. It can be caused by GD and can be linked to having a large baby or measuring big (they couldn't find a reason why I developed it). Pretty sure you would have been told at a scan if you had it; I think I found out at about 20 weeks (though my recollection of my first pregnancy is awful!).Though they've said I may develop it again later on in this pregnancy.

The growth scans are notoriously innacurate so I wouldn't worry too much. Though, most people I know who have had bigger babies have had quite straight forward deliveries. Don't worry too much, the pelvic floor is pretty tough! 😃

I also had polyhydramnios and had a weekly scan due to size. Head and stomach measurements off the charts. I also have a small pelvis. Was induced and she was born in her due date weighing 8lb 8oz after being told she would be at least 10lb. Needed stitches but no problems with actually getting her out. I think their measurements are not that accurate.

I was told that about 75% of cases of polyhydramnios have no specific cause, 20% are linked to GD and about 5% are linked to congenital problems with the baby (although generally those problems would be evident from the scans). So if the scans of baby are fine and there is no GD, the polyhydramnios is probably just 'one of those things'

I'm 38 weeks and being induced for a big baby, at 36 weeks he was measuring 42 weeks and his stomach is huge but I haven't got gd, although I'm shocked I don't considering the only thing I could keep down at the start was 2 cartons of orange juice haha. I'm only being induced because I was 7 stone before being pregnant and other than having a huge bump, I still fit into my size 6 leggings and things so they just wanted to air on the side of caution BUT I was told if I had gone into labour naturally before my induction date, I wouldn't have had to worry because bodies don't produce babies that they can't birth (don't know how true that is but that's what I was told) and no matter how big or small you are, the pelvis still opens near enough the same size (again, that's what I was told don't take my word 100%). I wouldn't worry x
