pregnant and ate mouldy cheese by accident

I'm 10 wks pregnant and my darling partner offered to cook slap up meal last night, except that he used mouldy cheddar with lots of green furry bits in the sauce. Lovely. I was so hungry I wolfed down quite a few mouthfuls before realising it tasted nasty. Now I'm worried that the mould is toxic/ dangerous for the baby, though I feel fine.

You will be fine. The baby will be fine. Even if you end up with food poisoning (which is highly unlikely as you're still feeling well) the baby is parasitic and will not suffer- just takes what it needs from you.

Tell dp to avoid cooking with furry food...

I think you'll be fine. Some women don't even know they're pregnant at 10 weeks (although they probably suspect!) & eat & drink all sorts of "forbidden" stuff. As long as you weren't sick?

I think the danger of eating mouldy cheese is that it could give your listeria. But how many people do you know who've actually suffered from listeria? The risk of actually getting it is tiny, and if you feel fine you definitely won't have it.

Thanks for all your reassurances. Hubby now banned from the kitchen which is probably what he was aiming for in the first place.

PS Listeria is I think a bacteria that just lives in soft cheeses whereas the mould that grows on cheddar etc is a different thing - though I can't be sure. Where are all the microbiologists when you need them!

Does anyone else get this neurotic!

I don't get that neurotic. I'm worse.

DarrellRivers · 08/03/2007 13:16

I did this too, and even though the risk is really theoretical, i worried about it loads.
It will be fine

dueat44 · 08/03/2007 15:05

My Mum would call that sort of mould penicillin.

Iklboo · 08/03/2007 15:12

Is DP doing that old "if I really make a b*lls up of cooking she won't ask me to do it again" is he

Chocolatepenny · 08/03/2007 15:23

If you feel well then you are Ok, Babies are pretty tough even at 10wks. Plus sounds like you have not got MS rejoice thats what I say!
