"Probably a girl"

I went for my 20 week scan yesterday, I'm not the smallest girls but never had a problem with my weight affecting the two previous scans I've had, the woman said she had trouble doing the heart measurements but got there in the end! she said I'm probably having a girl, do they normally say probably as a way of covering their backs or should I go for gender scan to confirm? I'm a bit confused as I'm a first time mum

Sounds like she couldn't see clearly and didn't want to give you a definite answer!

If you really want to know it might be best to wait a couple of weeks and go for a private 3D scan. The bigger the baby is the easier it is, regardless of your weight.

Even with a pretty good view, they don't like to say 100%.

I think you usually get a probably with a girl as it's harder to tell (for obvious reasons). For those reasons in sure you can appreciate it's only possible to be certain with a boy

At mine she said "it looks like a girl to me" but we could sort of her see her girly bits. There was lots of signs though saying they couldn't be 100%

It's always a probably with a girl in case bits are hiding whereas with a visible penis it's possible to be more definite.

I wouldn't rush out buying dresses on the back of that. I got "oh yes that's a girl" with mine (with the usual caveats as an afterthought!)

When the sonographer told us, she sounded pretty confident; "Ah it's a girl!" We had to go back 3 weeks later as she couldn't get all of the measurements and I decided to ask the sonographer (another one) to check the gender again; she said girl and showed us clearly. There's still a tiny bit of me that's thinking it could be wrong so haven't gone mad buying anything too girly. Although, extremely happy that it's a girl! If I was told it's "probably" a girl, I'd have definitely gone for a 3D private scan. We did look into it initially but put it on the back burner after we realised its best to wait until you're a little further along for the 3D scans.

Did she show you the three white lines? We had 2 20 week scans as not everything could be seen the first time. But we asked for the gender at both scans and they both showed us the 3 white lines which show the bones around the vagina (or something like that) which show it is definitely a girl. So we were really convinced after that.

Thanks for all the replies, I didn't get to see the potty shot, she had me Laying on my side away from her which I thought was odd in the first place, I've never been the skinniest but they've never had an issue seeing the baby before when it was obviously a lot smaller, my scans have always been very clear, Im looking up a gender scan but my boyfriend thinks it'll be a waste of money

I'm not slim either (size 14-16) and at my 20 week scan last week there were a few measurements she couldn't get to do with the spine. Were you told it was to do with your weight? Mine never mentioned it but I'm now wondering if it is - I was told it was just cos baby was in a curled up position and very lazy.

Also, I got a private gender scan with babybond. it was £69 for half an hour but it was very thorough, lovely, we got twelve pictures and lots of zoom ins of feet and hands which were nice. Also told us we were definitely having a girl and gave us some 4D view as well. I don't have a lot of money (I'm a student) but I'd say it's worth it if you can afford to.

We got "ah that looks like a girl to me" at my 16 week scan. But we also had a DNA test earlier in the pregnancy (to check for possible Down's syndrome) which had already proven that genetically she is a girl. ☺️

At our 20 week she said "looks like a girl" then moved on to look elsewhere, I think they say it just to cover themselves as no one I know has been told it definatley is a boy/girl. I had a 25 week private scan and asked them to look and he was more confident, took some potty shots and pointed out the parts. I hung onto DS's baby clothes just incase but she was born a girl! Its never 100% but I dont think they get it wrong very often.

Thanks all, feel a bit better now! I've always had a tummy but never been a problem with previous scans, always had very clear views. She did say my higher bmi means it's harder for her to get a clear view of the babys heart valves or something along those lines, a week previous I had my midwife tell me my bmi wasn't any concern and I was losing weight but the sonographer made me feel like I was the biggest hippo going!
