Fractured rib and labour

I had a fall yesterday - baby checked and all ok - but I have a suspected rib fracture. I'm 39 + 3. Am in a lot of pain and just wonder how on earth I will get through labour like this?! Anyone had a similar experience? Not due to see midwife until Saturday for a sweep.

No experience I'm afraid, but I have a crack in my leg bone that will require surgery after birth. I've been advised to have a c-section because of the injury as the doctors don't think I will be strong enough to give birth naturally.

I'd imagine that they will give you extra pain killers and maybe recommend extra monitoring during pregnancy? Maybe phone your midwife for some advice/peace of mind about what they would do?

That should be extra monitoring during labour, not pregnancy!

Could they give you a local anaesthetic to cover the area? You will need to take deep breaths!

If you go over your date you don't have to have the sweep. This will give you more time to heal.
I didn't realise you can refuse a sweep until the midwife told me 2 days ago- she even told me they are 80% of the time a waste of time and if it was her she would decline it.

Feck, that is going to hurt. What an unenviable combination. Talk to the midwife, you are gonna need good pain relief.

Thanks all, I will phone the midwife tomorrow to get some reassurance / advice. I know there's nothing they can do for ribs, they just have to heal. But I'm not sure how I'd cope with labour and this pain ontop of that. Also, maybe being paranoid but I'm scared the physical effort of labour will make the small fracture into a bigger one!! Thanks again everyone :)

My friend gave birth with a badly broken wrist (had a metal plate put in) and dislocated elbow. Not the same as a broken rib I know. That's a bit closer to the labour pain! But she just had extra attention and checks during labour and that was about it.

Hi there , ive literally just joined this website hoping to get answers? If anyone has been in this situation before and had everything turn out ok?! So i am 8 wks pregnant which I'm really happy about as it will be my first due to a previous miscarriage i had at 6-8 weekssad with my first miscarriage i started bleeding in the day which came with cramps which in the night got that bad and more and more blood to the point it gushed out i had to go to AnE, doctor / nurse said i had similar pain to contractions... Ouch. I had LOADS of big clots coming out which were huge too. In the end the baba did come out and it was heartbreaking sad Recently (2-3day ago) I started bleeding, starting off with brown discharge, turning into blood, i went to the doctors yesterday as a normal appointment and told her i had some bleeding and she said this is very common? So my mind was at ease but later last night i had a few cramps? Nothing major or uncomfortable, just annoying. I also passed one small clot today and just thicky bits of blood, (sorry for detail dont know how else to describe it >.
