Just had my 38 week midwife appointment and in my notes she has written 1/5th engaged... my midwife with my previous pregnancies told me that 5/5th would be completely out and 0/5th would be fully engaged, I just looked online and it's the other way around so I'm really confused? Can anyone share some light onto this for me please? She was at brim 2 weeks ago and I can tell for sure she has dropped!

I also just had my 38 week appointment- well I'm 37 weeks but it was meant to be my 38 week appt. she said I am 4/5 engaged and when I asked to check, she confirmed that meant only a little bit in my pelvis.

Ooo so I'm right then! I was at brim 2 weeks ago so I thought it would be a little odd if she had only dropped a little bit when I can physically see and feel the difference. Hoping this is a good sign and that I won't have to wait much longer! Thank you! Good luck to you tooFlowersseems like it's taking forever now don't know about you! Haha

I think in your notes if has an explanation for how it works (I have a feeling some areas do it different ways). I was only partially engaged the day before I had my son though so I don't think it means much!

I've looked through for an "understanding your notes" page but can't find one :/ I was 3/5th with dd2 at 30 weeks and went over 3 days so I'm not expecting miracles just progress! Haha

Everyone writes it differently... personally I write 1/5 palpable i.e., how much I can feel out of your pelvis, but like I said some midwives write engaged. It will also vary between different practitioners. Don't get bogged down in it.

To be honest 1/5 engaged makes more sense to me because it would 1/5 has moved into the pelvis. Things are never bloody clear, are they?! Grin

RedCrab · 14/03/2017 14:47

1/5 to say little bit engaged, I mean.

raviolidreaming · 14/03/2017 16:23

1/5 engaged means 1/5 is in your pelvis.
4/5 engaged means 4/5 in your pelvis.
0/5 engaged would be completely free.
5/5 engaged would be all in.

1/5 palpable means 4/5 engaged as only 1/5 can still be felt.
4/5 palpable means 1/5 engaged as 4/5 can still be felt.

So you're a little bit engaged!

RedCrab · 14/03/2017 16:44

THis is what she wrote in my notes. She definitely said 4/5 engaged but from the box it doesn't indicate engaged or palpable is meant. Maybe she meant 4/5 palpable as I asked if she meant a little bit engaged and she said yes.

I had 3/5 written in my notes last week at 36 weeks, no idea what it meant and I'm no clearer now!

In my first pregnancy 'numbers' were never mentioned, although his head was 'free' on the Wednesday and he was born on the Friday, so I'm trying not to put too much emphasis on the numbers.

It doesn't mean a huge amount until you're in labour. Out of the pelvis is slightly concerning at term but very individual
