Baby first aid course - the best £25 I've spent while pregnant

In case it helps anyone, DH and I went on a British Red Cross / NCT baby and child first aid course the other day (other ones are available, it was just the closest one to us). It was brilliant, a really informative 2.5 hours. It covered the obvious stuff (choking, CPR, burns, with theory and practice) but also the less obvious stuff (febrile convulsions, meningitis, head blows, water incidents...).

I've found it worryingly easy to lose hours and much money on what is probably inessential baby stuff. You're probably all ahead of me, but if not, I highly recommend a course like this. If possible I also recommend either going while pregnant or tag teaming so you're on the course without a baby. They pack so much into 2.5 hours, one poor dad with a colicky baby missed a lot of what was said.

Thanks for this - I didn't realise this course was available with my eldest five years ago, but have been considering going with this pregnancy, so it's nice to read a positive review! Xx

Millie's Trust also do a family first aid course....it's free if you are pregnant or your child is under 1 Smile

Yes they're brilliant. My children's centre ran them in conjunction with the red cross when dc1 was a baby. It made me feel really confident. Definitely money well spent. I had pediatric first aid through work anyway but it was still so helpful. My hospital ran refresher courses when I was pregnant with dc4 but I was in labour on the day I was booked in (I'd booked it at about 14 weeks). I might see if they still do them & try & book one further away from my edd this time!

We also did this a few weeks ago and thought it was absolutely brilliant. We now feel so much more confident that we could deal with any scary situation, which previously would have totally freaked us out!

I would recommend this to everyone!!

I did the red cross one about 3 years ago and whilst it was very good, I feel I've forgotten most of it. Time for a refresher I think.
