Gained 20kg at 36.5 weeks - stressing baby is going to be massive.

I'm due 13th March. Got weighed and have gained 20kg!!! I have been eating large portions but always healthy food, just maybe to many carbs. Midwife said baby is in great position and head engaged. I am 5'9 and she kept saying 'you know you're not going to have a small baby don't you'

I am now stressed I am growing a monster size baby! She proceeded to tell me about a 12lb baby she delivered a few weeks ago

I am meauring 37 weeks at 36 + 3 so not overly large. I just wondered with the head being so low does that stop my bump from measuring large? She said I didn't need a growth scan as measurements are fine.

Hoping you can reassure me.

I put on nearly 4 stone. Ate exactly the same as before I was pregnant. Like you, just slightly larger portions and always good stuff. Bump measured spot on but baby was large. I was colossal.

DS is 11 weeks and I weigh the same as I did pre-pregnancy and my body's gone back to how it was (except perhaps the bottom of my gut.)

It was all retained water as far as I can tell because I spent the first 6-8 weeks sweating it all out, seriously, the sweating was ridiculous!

I hardly put any weight on with my first and she was 10lb 10oz! I'm 5"8 and she was really long. She's wasn't even that chunky and was in newborn clothes for a few weeks still.

Im 5ft 4, gained well over >20kg in pregnancy and delivered a perfectly manageable 8lb 4 baby.

Lots was water, a fair bit was fat . Think I didn't really notice while pregnancy as the bump is a welcome distraction. All gone now. Try not to worry about daft midwifes and their unhelpful comments.

PS amount of weight you put on is an indication of how much you've been eating, not how big your baby is.

I was bigger with DC2 and 3 than DC1 but DC1 was the biggest baby.

My on/gyne also told me after a scan at 35 weeks, and examining me, that he did not recommend a vbac (although I could try if I really wanted to,) because my baby was on track to be in the region of 5kg (11 lbs) ... He was 3.6 kg (8 lb 4)

Forgot to say, I'm 5,3 (started at 9,5 ) and ds was 8 lb 15 oz born by EMCS as he was back to back and at a funny angle.

I'm 5'5 and gained 50 pounds. DD was 7.15lbs.

I ate healthily, average size portions.

With DS I ate far, far more, more junk and gained exactly the same amount of weight. He was 8lbs.

I honestly think that you can't do anything about weight gain in pregnancy.

I gained about 20kg with DS and he was 6lb12 born 40+6.

Have you got a growth scan or anything booked in? I know they're not always accurate but I think mine was, at 36 weeks they said they though he was about 5lb10 so not completely off.

How has the midwife said how big you're measuring? I measured big and from that she said she thought he would be about 9lb.

I gained 20kg and DS was big, yes, 4.56kg (10lbs 1oz) BUT it was fine. Water birth, gas and air, a couple of stitches, but I recovered really fast, was only sore for a few days and having a big baby was nice because I wasn't so scared I'd break him. I gained about the same with DD second pregnancy but she was "only" 3.75kg (8lbs 4oz). Didn't get my water birth with her because she was out before they had time to turn on the taps to fill the pool. No stitches with her. So try not to worry.

I gained a stupid amount and I'm another for inability to control the weight you put on in pregnancy. All gone now. Wish I could go back and tell myself to chow down and worry not a jot!

I put on 10kg, but after my 3kg son was born, I lost another 10kg! So basically I had lost weight during my pregnancy. That was a lot of water... A lot! It might be fine!

Two colleagues and I all had babies who weighed 8lbs13. I put on 3.5 stone, another gained 2 stone and one only gained 8lbs!
With DC2, I gained 4 stone & yet DC2 only weighed 7lbs 12.

Thanks everyone, feeling a bit better.

I am 36+3 and measure at 37 weeks so not measuring too far ahead. I asked for a growth scan but she said there was no need as babies growth was a perfect curve...

Everyone was telling me what a whopper DC1 would be and in the end he was 7.11lb / 3.4kgs which is about average.

Try not to worry about weight gain - there is really very little you can do about it and worrying will only ruin the last weeks of your pregnancy when you should be eating as much cake as you want and putting your feet up.

I gained 4 stone with my first, she weighed 7,13 on on her due date.
I gained 5 stone with my 2nd and she weighed 9lb but was 17 days late. In my chart this time there is a growth chart with their weights plotted and apparently number 2 was at a slightly lower percentile despite being over a lb heavier at two weeks later. My second birth with my larger baby was a doddle, really quick and easy with no tearing.
I'm determined not to gain so much this time and at nearly 17 weeks I'm currently weighing less than I did at the start of both my other pregnancies, but I'm still expecting a largish baby.

I put on over 20 kg with my first but it was nearly invisible - I had a near bump, no spread elsewhere, people telling me I looked way less pregnant than I was, even at 40 weeks, not looking pregnant from behind, etc. I was worried about my weight and asked my doctor at every appointment as I was gaining more than the books said but she wasn't concerned. Baby was born at 40+6 weighing a little over seven and a half pounds.

My sister had similar experience in pregnancy and from what I've seen of photos of my mother, she also carried very 'neat' pregnancies so I suspect there is a genetic component.

I had been tested for gestational debates and was negative so that helped me worry less about the large weight gain.

Your midwife sounds very insensitive by the way.

How much weight yo put on is NOT an indication of how much you have been eating or the size of your baby!

All women put on different amounts of weight in pregnancy, but 20kg is perfectly normal.

Try not to worry - think that was a bit careless of your midwife to throw that comment out there. Think it's almost impossible for them to accurately guess the weight of baby just by the bump. And your weight has nothing to do with it. I'm 36 plus 3 today and at my growth scan yesterday (they do them in my area) was told my baby has an absolutely huge tummy and weighs nearly 3kg ! I've put on 10kgs this pregnancy.
