Is this common in scan photos?

I had my dating scan last week (13w) and was told everything was as they expected. However, I have been having a bit of a panic over the scan photo lol.

My concern is that the top of the head doesn't have a defined round outline like you see on most? The Sonographer didn't mention there was an abnormality on the skull. However, it looks like the skull doesn't close at the top. Did anyone else have this on their dating scan and know why?

It ls likely that there was just a shadow from something (e.g. your belly button) that means the angle the scan picture was taken from didnt show the skull outline. Dont worry, they would have told you if there was a problem with the skull!

babies don't pose perfectly for these things, in my scan the hands looked as if they had come off the arms, but this was just because the arms were not in focus. Quite normal.

It depends a lot on baby's position. Mine had limbless hands, same as user148...

They aren't obedient enough to press themselves up neatly against your tummy to get a nice clear picture so it all depends on their position in your uterus.

My baby looked less like a baby on my 20 week scan photo than on my 12 week scan! I'm assuming it will look more like a baby when it arrives at the end of April

Thank you for your reassuring comments! I have got to say, he/she was a huge wriggler and would rarely keep still for 5 seconds. I dont care about not having a perfect photo but it was more of a concern of "I can't see the baby has a top for their head?!" Typical child making it's Mum worry already!

My baby has three legs and no arms when my untrained eye looks at my scan photo sonographer didn't mention anything so I'm going to say that baby just had the standard set of limbs.

it will be the angle. The sonographer would have noticed if anything was unusual - in the nicest possible way, that's his/her job, and it's not yours.

And I say this as someone who was genuinely seriously convinced that her baby didn't have a chin after one scan.....

Yeah I totally secretly convinced myself my baby had anencephaly based on 12 week scan pic...he didn't!

Mine didn't have a nose! The sonographer promised me she'd seen it but couldn't for the life of her get a picture with it in.

You'll be pleased to hear ds does indeed have a nose which he investigates regularly with his finger.
