Obstetrics appointment

Hi I have an obstetrics appointment tomorrow due to my son (now 5) being a "low birth weight" I was just wondering if anyone had experience of this and what u could expect? Will they do a scan etc, thank you :) I will be 16+6

They might discuss growth scans later on I guess (i'm having to go four weekly for growth scans from 24 weeks, for a different reason). There isn't much difference in growth at this stage

Try not to worry. Maybe take a notepad to jot things down?

My first child (now nearly 4) was a low birth weight (5lb13oz) when he was born at 39+6. This time round I have had growth scans from 28-36 weeks when they decided that although this baby has a predicted low-ish birth weight (est under 6.5lbs) everything was growing well and the rate of growth was exactly as it should be I must just make smaller babies. Just think of the positive side - if you get extra scans you get to see your baby more, and you have the experts keeping a close eye on you all the way through your pregnancy :) 2 weeks left for me, hope yours goes well! X

Yes- I just had extra scans as above. No other issues, no objections to a home birth and she was 8lb 7 in the end (first was 5lb9).

I also had this with my second baby - my first was 6lb 1. I had lots of extra growth scans and he too was smallish at birth at 6lb 13. They decided that I probably just have smaller babies. I had my first baby in East Sussex and my second in Kent - my midwife told me that they do more research into lower birth weights and IUGR in Kent so I probably wouldn't have had the same growth scans if still in East Sussex.

My ds was 6lb 5oz so I was sent for a routine scan at around 22 weeks (I think!). Dd was measuring under the 10th centile so I had to go for weekly scans until she was born. They alternated growth scans and dopplers so growth scans were every other week. She was breech too so my options were either induced early due to growth or planned section due to breech. At 37 weeks she turned and had a little growth spurt so she was born vaginally at 40+4 weighing 6lb 11oz- not a worrying weight.

My DS was 6lb at full term (though caught up- almost 75th centile for weight and about to leap off the chart for height). We have development clinic follow ups for another reason and the consultant mentioned she wanted to refer me (she seemed specifically fixated on the fact he'd had these huge growth spurts whilst being breastfed rather than bottle fed). From those of you who have experienced this is it just extra scans? Consultant led care? Good luck colourfulorange

Colourful, I'm sure it will be, the scans in my case are purely precautionary as we were on holiday when I got pregnant and there's a tiny risk of exposure to Zika

tappity, the first extra scan showing dd was under the 10th centile automatically made me consultant led. When she inched over the 10th centile and turned over I went back to mw led. They were never very concerned as her rate of growth was steady-she was just little but were very thorough. I would have the scan and then be sent to see the registrar at a clinic, they did any weighing/bloods etc. There was always a really long wait so the appointments often took all morning or afternoon which was hard as ds was only 18 months old! By 36 weeks I knew all of the sonographers and they thought the amount I was being scanned was excessive.
