Can someone talk me down. I b.f my 2nd son until he was a year old, it wasn't easy but after being unable to do it with ds1 I carried on.
I'm now with d s3 he fed lovely after birth but now my nipples are agony. He's obviously not latching on right, night time feeds are awful. I've give in a couple of times and given him an oz in a bottle I know this wont help but I'm dreading feeds. I've watched youtube videos and tried with midwife here but nothing works

Breastfeeding was agony for me for about 3 weeks, nipple shields got me through. We also gave small amounts of formula. It gradually got better and I ended up feeding until she was 2.

Thankyou I remember it being painful to start with before. I'm just struggling with the guilt feeling if I give up now

Argh I remember it well! Utter agony at first.

Could there be a problem with the latch? Have you had him checked for tongue tie? Could you have thrush perhaps? You need to see someone who can give you hands on help. Have a Google to see if there's a Breastfeeding cafe or a la leche league near you.

Have a look on www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk is there a drop in locally? Or NCT or La Leche League?

You can see if they can help you improve the positioning and the pain could be sorted.

Getting an opinion from fresh eyes can really help.

Every baby is different.

Beware of nipple shields, can wonders short term, but long term can affect your supply in some cases as your baby can't empty the breast as well.

Good luck!
