Always think Archie is quite similar to Alfie. Just don't much like the full version of either! Round here variations of Jack are really popular. Also Jo, Isaac and Oscar and Ollie and Luke. A couple of Montys also stick in my mind - was surprised to meet one, even more so to meet a second. Have met a lot of baby Tristans lately too.
Dh and I wanted commonplace names that weren't and went for Adam and Guy - though a lot of people have to check they've heard Guy's name correctly, so a part of me wishes it was a bit more common. Since we felt that their first names couldn't be played around with we then gave them second names that could, in case they wanted to "swap" their name. (Db goes by his middle name.) William and Christopher.
How about looking up the top 50 ot 100 names in your area and scanning the list with your dh? Gave us a few ideas.
Read an article yesterday that said that 16 % of people call their child by one of the top 5 names (30 years ago the figure was 33%). So don't stress too much if you love the most popular name.

Creena · 26/02/2007 14:13

I'm struggling with names for this one full stop. I've read the baby name sites, bought a baby name book, read all the credits when watching films or TV shows in case an interesting name pops up and zilch. I did think that I had settled on one name for a girl and one for a boy but DH isn't keen on either of them. The problem is, when I ask him for alternatives, he just jokingly comes up with stupid names like Bovril! This weekend, when shopping for baby stuff in Mothercare, he picked up a baby book and started leafing through ut. He laughed and said "What about this for a boy - Lambert?" I just sighed and asked him if he was going to suggest Butler as the middle name......

ScottishThistle · 26/02/2007 14:21

My favourite boys names have always been: Lewis (my Brother)
Alexander (my Grandfather
Finlay (my Father)
but who knows what I'll choose when I eventually have a child!

It must be really hard to choose a name nowadays as there are so many to choose from, old fashioned names seem to have made a comeback over the last couple of years.

pucca · 26/02/2007 14:23

I too had this problem, girl's names there is much more choice.

We chose (well i did lol) George Henry in the end, suits him actually too.

kateyp · 26/02/2007 15:25

I agree - really tricky to choose boys names. This will be our 3rd boy (our first was a stillbirth, our second a very active toddler at present) and so we have "used up" our faves already!!

Those in the running are:

Bruno
Theo
Oliver (I know I know - hundreds of them!!!)
Dylan

Girls names are easy! We have loads that we love. Did vaguely consider posting on a different website as they have polls to help you decide - but then realised that I could never tell a child "we chose your name because of what random strangers said on the internet!"

thehairybabysmum · 26/02/2007 15:28

I had this problem too and will have again come Oct if this one is a boy too.

Love Bruno KateyP

Have to say i think Alfie is nice for a young boy but just cant get past the fact that surely they will be called 'ALF' when older (even if not by you) and this just makes me think of home and away!!!

laudaud · 26/02/2007 15:35

Creena,

So glad I'm not the only one that checks the TV and Film credits
We were having problems with a boys name and had finally settled on one - then had a DD. Told people what she would have been called if she had been a boy and got some quite negative responses. Having to have a rethink if next baby is a DS. Like some of the names mentioned below.

PinkButterfly · 26/02/2007 15:55

ScottishThistle - I am currently pg and we have just found out we are having a girl this time but we had chosen Fynn Alexander as our name should we have had a boy !! (I also loved Thomas Alexander and would have been happy with a ds being called Tom if shortened but too worried Tam may have been used by some.

MrsMar · 26/02/2007 15:57

we're having problems with boys names too. We're both from an Italian background with Italian/French names, so I thought it would be nice to have something that reflects our heritage. Dh likes Enzo, but I'm really not sure, my parents hate it (but of course it's not their choice) I like Luca. For a girl I'm thinking of Francesca, but hey, who knows? s/he might come out and really look like a Bernard, so I might just wait and see...

rhubarb90 · 26/02/2007 16:00

I agree with many of you, boys names are soo much harder to find than girls names. We used up the two names we liked with DS1 and cannot seem to find or agree on any others now we are expecting another baby. I'm kind of hoping it'll be a girl really, although I probably shouldn't say that...

annobal · 26/02/2007 16:07

I know what you mean re boys names being difficult. We have 2 DSs and are expecting a 3rd. DS1 is Thomas William James and DS2 is George Oliver Harry. In the running for no3 are:

Charlie (Charles)
Henry
Alexander (working on DH for this one)
Gilbert (Gil - is this pg hormones gone mad??)
Edward (Ted or Ned)
Maurice (Maurie - def pg hormones gone mad!)

Gingerbear · 26/02/2007 16:12

me and lockets COMPLETELY agree on the name wavelength

Boys are easy. Girls I am struggling with.

incy · 26/02/2007 16:33

I think there has been a lot less movement in the popular boys names and so the same boys names stay popular.

Personally I like all of the traditional boys names such as George, William, Henry, Jack etc and have accepted that since all of them are well used it doesn't really matter which one I go for.

As I am having another DS I guess it will be one of the well worn names.

For what it is worth a friend thought she had been very clever and unusual using Milo for her son. She was devestated about the Tweenies !

MrsFish · 26/02/2007 17:25

I have a Samuel James (james being his fathers name), if my next one is a boy I want Benjamin but haven't a clue for the middle name. If its a girl we are going for Charlotte Eleanor, so she has many combinations of names she can choose from when older.

Noah seems to be the name of the moment, I have heard of at least 3 new Noah's in the past couple of months.

kitty17 · 26/02/2007 17:40

Hi all just reading all your mesages, Kit is nice as a boy's name but.... well I use Kit (im female) was given it as a toddler and stuck with it and prefer to use instead of my name.....anyway my boys names I like.

Took me forever to think of a boys name, had a girls name lined up as soon as i new is was pregnant, only decided the week before my wee one was born and just as well i did, I had a boy.....

skerriesmum · 26/02/2007 17:40

if you like Alfie/Frankie kind of names, how about Riley or Harvey?

ingym23 · 27/02/2007 12:17

Boys' names are so hard!!

I have two boys, and for both of them DH and I could not agree for days after they were born.

DH really liked "Max" for DS1, but I wouldn't accept it as I didn't think it would go with our surname (also starting with M). He then came up with "Jack". I had no major objections, and he "looked" like a "Jack" by then!

Fastforward to when DS2 was born, he came early and we still couldn't agree on a name, and DH still really like Max. I didn't have any name that I loved, so I relented.....

I think the whole problem was that we wanted a strong, masculine name, and DH thought that all the names I was coming up with were too "poncy"!

There are so many lovely girls' names out there, if we ever have a third I am really hoping it would be a girl as the name would be so much easier ;-)

nadinetd · 27/02/2007 12:22

I love riley but my dh cousin has 2 boys called riley and regan and i love both of them x

quietmouse · 27/02/2007 12:25

How about

Mason, Tyler, Brogan, Taylor, Harley, Archie, Ronnie?

I'll keep thinking

ingym23 · 27/02/2007 12:27

My DH is Paul, and he has a cousin called Paul. The cousin though is a fair bit older (I think about 10 years) so almost of a different generation. The two sisters must have just liked the same name! (He has a brother called David, and his sister married a David, so that is a bit confusing too!)

If you really like a name, I would say just go for it (so long as DH agrees of course ;-)
