Referral for previous LGA

Has anyone been referred to a consultant for having a previous baby LGA? I've been told I need a referral but have declined for the time being. Can you tell me what they would say/offer me having had a previous 'big' baby?

They might offer you a glucose tolerance test (GTT) and/or serial growth scans in order to monitor the growth of your baby. It might be that if it looks like you're baby is going to be on the bigger side again they would discuss birth options and potential complications, and possibly offer an early induction. The GTT is to see if you have gestational diabetes as that can be a cause of LGA. Of course you are free to decline anything offered. How big was your previous baby? Xx

Thank you that's interesting, she was 96th percentile. Birth was completely fine, not tearing. No issues. I don't think I'd be interested in early induction under those circumstances

To be honest I found interest in previous LGA babies really mixed! They seemed determined that I had GD so I had three GTT (bleurgh) despite always having normal results. Midwives weren't bothered, consultant wasn't either, but the odd registrar got their knickers in a twist, especially as I wanted a VBA2C.

Mine were 91st (@37wks), 98th (@39wks) and 98th (40+1). God knows what this next one will be - no doubt I'm in for many more GTT!

Oh and I did get some extra growth scans out of it all, so that made up for the GTT.

Okay thanks. Thing is I really really hate scans. Just get incredible stressed by them. And I really don't think I have GD! Did you get your Vba2c?

Out of interest. Were you happy to accept the repeated GTTs? I just said straight out no thank you but I'm wondering why I had such a strong reaction to the idea!

What weight was she? (curious really).

9lb 1/2oz!!!! I've heard of women having bigger to be honest

Mine was 9lb4 and there's been no mention of a large baby. I think different areas have different rules regarding 'large'. (Although he was 42w cooking).

If you are nervous about scans and have already delivered your 'large' baby without complications I can't see what gains you have talking to consultant.

FWIW I did have a quick consultant chat this time, but that was more to do with my severe tear last birth (forceps, the works) and he agreed I was unlikely to produce a 'small' baby (given family history - I was 9lb4 too, OH was larger, and SIL larger still) but still wasn't suggesting any interventions or GTTs or scans, and is perfectly happy for me to birth however I like, including at home.

I think she's been labelled LGA because I'm small as it's a personalised growth chart. She was 39+5 so no extra time to cook. Plan is this one will be born at home like my others.
I think I'm going to play it by ear if I start measuring bigger than the last one then maybe see someone.

I'm also pretty tiny. They've not yet measured my bump this time though (that's next mw appointment) but even last time I seem to recall I was a bit over my 'personalised' growth chart and no one seemed to bat an eyelid.

Bump measurements most accurate if done by the same midwife each time too, not sure that happens in your area (certainly not in mine!) so if it's only one measurement that's out, or if you're not consistently out, I'd be inclined to ignore.

Yes I'll see the same mw each time or at least did last time and it's the same set up this time. Her predictions were spot on using the bump measurement and chart.
