I am 10 weeks and I keep having such awful coughing fits. I'm finding it hard to sleep because it's worse at night and my tummy hurts so much from all the coughing that I'm starting to worry about it making me miscarry. Daft I know, but my tummy feels so strained

Does anyone know of any natural remedies or safe medicines?

coughing will not cause you to miscarry

although you can hurt your muscles, try hunching over a little bit and sort of holding your tummy

make sure you drink lots of fluid, hot lemon & honey, speak to pharmacist re a suitable over the counter remedy.....

try steam too and sleep slightly propped up

I got a bad chest infection at 31 weeks and in the end had to take antibiotics. I was told they would have no effect on the baby but I'm not sure if it's the same with such an early stage of pg.
The good thing is I was totally reassured by doctor that the coughing can't hurt the baby.
Can't think of anything really to help you out other than soothing your throat with honey and lemon.
Poor you - I know how much the tummy muscles hurt.
Maybe call NHS direct?

good luck x

yes me, don't worry coughing won't make you miscarry

but 1 in 100 women (supposedly) develop asthma during pregnancy .. one of the signs of asthma is worse at night (particularly in the early hours_

you have my sympathies .. it was awful .. I think I was about 18 weeks when it started and it was diagnosed as chest infections for about 2 months then as asthma .. (never had it before) and ended up on oral steroids as well as inhalers

try sleeping propped up .. not comfortable but acheivable .. that could lessen it

that said there are currently some nasty bugs going around

I'd recommend you get checked out by your doctor

I had really awful endless coughing when I was pregnant. It was caused by a dust build up at work, although I didn't know that at the time.

At one point it was so bad, that I thought my waters had broken, but I had just wet myself instead!

Dd is bouncing healthy baby, so I don't think it affects them

Hi, I'm 31 weeks & have been coughing like mad for nearly 2 weeks- chesty bit was ok but then it went really dry & tickly- I started to get so worried, and stomach was SO painful (had to get on all fours at night to cough!) that I finally went to chemist- got this stuff 'glycerine, lemon & honey' it totally stopped it- wish I had gone before! I just presumed I couldnt take anything. Go to your chemist and ask- dont suffer like I did!

Have also been taking the Glycerine and Honey and although it tastes fowl,it has helped.

I have coughed almost throughout the whole of my pregnancy! Im 35 weeks tomorrow and have been taking Simple linctus on and off for the last 3 months! I wouldnt of normally taken anything but was diagnosed with an incompetant cervix and baby threatened to come along at 24 weeks! Miracously im still pregnant (feel overdue!) Apparently these cough mixtures are harmless and in my case the coughing would of caused more damage! It came back quite recently and actually brought on braxton hicks contractions! It is best to get it treated although im pretty sure coughing alone will not bring on labour!

Pastalady, when I was 20 weeks pg I got a really bad chest infection and was hospitalised for 5 days - steroids, anti-biotics - the lot.

You are probably too early in your pregnancy for that sort of medication, afaik, but if its bad enough that your stomach muscles are hurting I would see your GP on Monday. There may be something you can take.

I also had a cough more towards the end of the pregnancy and it was awful - I remember holding on the bump just so that I could cough properly without it hurting too much!

Hope you feel better soon

I had a really bad cough which started at about 20 weeks, I also had bad heartburn. When I mentioned this to my GP he said that the coughing was caused by the acid in my stomach coming up during the night and being inhaled and causing an irritation to my windpipe. He said it was quite a common complaint. Suggested elevating the head of the bed. I have done this and also take Gaviscon before bed and cough is now much better.
