Listeria scare

Hello I'm new to netmums im creating this thread because yesterday my partner made me a sandwich with out of date flora margarine he didn't realise it went out of date September last year but now I'm worried because I think it was kept out the fridge ages to. I called the hospital who just said to come in if I am sick but symptoms can take up to 2 months to show and this can be very dangerous for my son. Any reassurance?

I wouldn't panic. Flora isn't like fresh cream, there's enough chemicals in those tubs to keep it listeria free until Donald Trump decides to end the world in a nuclear holocaust.

If we all panicked every time we ate something we shouldn't, A&E would be constantly full of women fretting over having eaten a piece of salami or soft serve ice cream.

Flora isn't butter...

Layarose · 15/01/2017 11:26

I understand this , but when I looked it up it wasn't giving me a clear answer to if it would cause harm. I mean it's been out of date since September and out the fridge for ages

As above, Flora isn't butter so I imagine not an issue.

Layarose · 15/01/2017 11:27

And I found it worrying it tasted weird and then there was like this weird black mark on the lid like mould

Apparently (I could be wrong) you can eat butter and margarine up to 4-5 months after the best before date.

Layarose · 15/01/2017 11:30

I thought that but I think it's was the fact it was left out for so long like months and I saw that weird thing on the lid just want my son ok

Marge is basically vegetable oil & water.

Also the amount of spread on a sandwich is negligible.

GinIsIn · 15/01/2017 11:36

It's fine - flora is essentially vegetable oil, and doesn't really go out of date. A mark on the lid would most likely be from some other food getting in there off the knife at some point, not the flora itself.

Maybe give your fridge a quick clean out though, if there's things in there that went off 4 months ago! Grin

Try not to worry about this - it really should be fine.

Oh and ps. This isn't netmums.... Grin
