Expecting DC1 in late spring after fertility treatment. I'm really anxious, so I'm sorry if this is way too PFB.

A friend of my mum's has a one year old. She has just given me this www.boots.com/en/Fisher-Price-Rainforest-Melodies-Lights-Deluxe-Baby-Play-Gym_982767/ along with a warning that it 'needs a good clean'. We're friends, but not good enough friends that I can ask her how it has been stored IYSWIM. She's unlikely to ever visit my house due to distance.

The mat went through the washing machine. The fabric sleeves covering the legs can't be removed, so have to be hand wiped.

There were quite a few (maybe 30) black dots on either side of the giraffe. The only thing I could think of was mould/mildew, so in a fit of irrational PFB-panic I chopped off and binned the giraffe, exposing the smooth plastic bit underneath. On one of the other fabric sleeves of another leg, I've just seen another black mark. The rest of it (the mat, the hanging toys, the other fabric sleeves) look fine.

I've got several options:

  • get over myself and keep it. Should I chop off the other sleeve with the black dot? Or will DC potentially hurt themself on the plastic (the sleeve was just thin polyester covering, I can't see that it provided much protection)?
  • bin the whole thing
  • bin most of it but keep the hanging toys and mat as they seem ok?

...and yes I need to talk to my midwife, because I'm not sure this level of worry over a playmat is normal.

I'd bit it because mould isn't great for their lungs or skin and you can't really get rid of it without soaking in bleach.

I have 3 so no pfb thinking here! Get a nice new one, it doesn't have to be Fisher Price, Argos do them.

Congrats on your pregnancy! Smile

Bin it, that was meant to say.

Bin it. I am not PFB at all (have 2 DC) and love gumtree, eBay etc but I wouldn't have it for my kids. Black mould is dangerous for tiny babies. I would never give someone something that was in such a state so I think she was just looking rid of it and palmed it off in you.

So glad to know I'm not being entirely PFB and mad! Thank you Xmas Smile

Bin it! Who would give that to someone?!???!

Jodie1982 · 27/12/2016 12:01

Bin it. You can get baby gyms really cheap nowadays.

AlexandraEiffel · 27/12/2016 12:03

I'd bin it too.

But I would also look into support for anxiety now too, if you think you might be prone. I had reasons to think I was likely to suffer, and having put steps in place first meant I wasn't trying to figure it out whilst dealing with a new born too. Chucking out the toy isn't pfb or over anxious, but worrying about it and struggling to make a decision could be. Best wishes for the rest of the pregnancy

Snowflakes1122 · 27/12/2016 14:46

Unless money is really tight, is bin it!

It's only £30 and probably even less if you shop around.

arrrrrh thank you :)

Bin it!, i did the same same with a bath seat someone gave me. They won't know

For mold and mildew I spray with dilute steralizing solution until wet - leave in sunlight, scrub with a stiff nailbrush, repeat if necessary. Works about 90% of the time. Great on pushchairs that have been folded a bit damp and stuff thats been stored.

PeachBellini123 · 28/12/2016 21:37

I'd get rid of it, I don't think you're being PFB at all.
