Weight loss in pregnancy

I had sickness and nausea + pretty extensive loss of appetite in the first trimester up until 16 weeks. I was also overweight to start with and, of course, I stopped drinking, which I know is empty calories. So I expected to lose a bit of weight but I found that between booking in at around 8-9 weeks and an appointment at 16 weeks I'd lost 4kg. At the hospital at this 16 week appointment they said it wasn't a problem so long as things started moving the other way soon. I've just weighed myself and my scales tell me I've lost another 4kg in 4 weeks.

I've had one more bout of sickness that lasted a couple of days but otherwise I've been getting my appetite back. It's still a bit less than it was before and I'm struggling a bit with protein as I still can't face much meat but I think I'm eating pretty healthily - fruit, veg, fish, cheese, etc. I probably have one too many biscuits as well and have demolished a chocolate orange over the last few days.

I'm going to weigh myself again in the morning and it's always possible our scales have gone wrong but if it's the same should I be calling my midwife? Has anyone else lost weight in pregnancy after the first trimester?

20 week scan was this week and baby was measuring perfectly average and a bit above average in some respects, so that gives me a little reassurance for now.

Don't worry, weight loss in the first trimester is really common. If you were overweight before pg you're expected to gain less weight overall, so please don't stress, you and the baby will be fine Flowers

Hiya Vida
Sounds like we're in the same boat. I'm 19+2 & was high BMI when I discovered I was pregnant. Have been losing steadily throughout pregnancy (1st tri too fatigued too eat now too sick in 2nd) but mw and consultant say so long as urine tests ok for ketones and I'm hydrated I shouldn't worry.
Good luck!

I was a few stone overweight to start with. I lost weight til about week 30 then started gaining. Everything I gained was baby etc and was gone within 2 weeks of DS being born.
If you're eating healthily then that's a good thing. You don't have to gain weight.
I was 1 stone 5 lighter than when I got pregnant a year later

Thanks so much for the replies. I had my urine tested really recently for infection and nothing untoward came back. I also haven't lost or gained anything this week. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

I had HG with both my pregnancies and actually ended up lighter at 9 months pregnant than I was before! I was overweight to begin with too, as long as your midwife isn't concerned then try not to worry
