Are you in early pregnancy, less than 16 weeks pregnant?

Newham have launched a pilot team of Midwives who will be caring for women in E20 in a case loading model.

What does this mean?

Would you like to see the same midwife throughout your pregnancy and after the birth, and one of the small team of midwives for your birth? Would you like to have met all the Midwives in the team at some point in the pregnancy? Would you like a more personalised, flexible pregnancy experience? Then the Group Practice Team could be for you.

Following the Better Births study a small group of NHS Midwives are planning to see their women from the first appointment, throughout the pregnancy and afterwards. We aim for you to see your midwife for the majority of the appointments. On any occasions she is away, you will see her buddy midwife who she works with. We know that mums want to get to know their Midwife and this is what we are aiming to provide. We aim to see our women in a mixture of locations, in clinics, at home or to be able to support you if you need to see other services in the hospital. We want to have are more ‘one to one’ service where we build a bond and trust with our mums. This not only makes mum and her family happy, but it gives great satisfaction to the midwife. We also understand that families work, or have commitments and need flexibility for appointments. This is why we will work flexible shifts to cover weekends and evenings as well as the usual daytime appointments.
We also hope to be able to offer you drop in sessions in your pregnancy so that you can meet the other Midwives in the team, ask questions and prepare for the baby or seek extra support afterwards. When you have your baby it will be your Midwife or one of the team who supports you through labour.
We will support your labour wherever you feel safe and happy to have your baby, whether it be at Home, in The Birth Centre or if you need to be in Hospital. The team will be on call

Why just E20 ?

We have chosen an area to start with to trial the new service. We will start with E20 Olympic Village area, extending to some of E7 and E15 at a later date. We hope to be able to make this the normal way of working for Newham Maternity if we can make it a success. Exciting times for the women of E20 and Newham!

Do I need to pay extra for this.
No – This is in your normal NHS Maternity care.

Contact us on [email protected] or call on 07702 338519. See your E20 GP, or fill out a self-referral form at Newham Hospital specifying Group Practice Team.

We look forward to meeting you.

Is this allowed on this forum?

SeashellHoarder · 15/12/2016 15:22

This sounds great, I wish they did this in more areas!

Surely it's allowed- it's helpful for pregnant women to know about new nhs services.

HatpinL · 15/12/2016 19:36

I really hope so. I'm a Midwife in the team and we're really passionate about Midwifery and making the experience positive and more personal for women. It's so terrible to sometimes hear women's stories of not feeling supported and cared for in pregnancy. Just thinking of way to help women know what they are entitled to and spread the word about our new team .
