I've had one friend make the comment when I said I was still going to the gym, why bother, you're pregnant. Mmm I'd rather have some fitness and not get too big, as I'm sure it will be difficult to lose afterwards. Another elderly friend, actually checked out my bum (yes BUM) as she thought it looked massive, turned out it was my drapey preggy cardi and not me at all , but everytime she sees me I get comments on my weight. I'm 25wks, and put on about 7kgs, I can still fit my normal jeans in all areas except zipping them up.

I've only been weighed once in each pg at some random appointment. I gave my "starting" wt both times to midwife at booking visit.
And the only time any concern was shown about my wt was when I hopped onto scales and commented I didn't have a clue what I'd be. I meant it in a "who cares" kind of way but my midwife thought (as i was a formally slender woman) I meant I was worried about too much wt gain!

Both my boys are 97% green and blacks chocolate BTW.So I might have to start thinking about my wt myself now!

Everyone told me how "neat" I was at around 5 months pg - but I am tall so I can take a bit of extra weight - having said that NOONE was calling me "neat" by 9 months!!!!

By the end of my pregnancy I had gained about 30 pounds (over 2 stone) and I shed less than half of that in labour. I ate healthily during pregnancy and did some exercise not because of the weight but because I was terrified of labour and hoped that being healthy would help! I really did not watch what I ate obsessively and I did have about 15 pounds to lose after having ds and that took me over a year - but that was by eating my normal diet (again, I think reasonably healthy but with the odd chocolate splurge).

Once I had ds I did want to get back to my old size, but that was also because I wanted the energy that being a bit smaller gave me. Frankly I was far to busy looking after my baby to obsess about my own appearance too much!

appledumpling · 22/02/2007 17:35

I'm 36 weeks and have put on 8kg (started at 66kg). I've eaten when hungry but I've been lucky not to crave sweet things. I've exercised when I've felt like it. Sometimes 4 times a week, sometimes a big fat zero.

SIL is 20 weeks and already as big as me and she's not changed the way she eats and walks the dog every day.

So it just depends on the person I think and it shouldn't be an issue.

My Mum sometimes obsesses a bit about my supposed weight gain but she has issues on that score so I ignore her.

If you feel well and the baby is well then does anything else really matter? IMO.

do not worry about putting on weight during pregnancy. It is so important for the child and if you have a big baby it will sleep through the night quicker! I put on over 3 stone both times and i always allow about a year to get all of it off. i am a bit spoilt because i have a freezer full of delicous ready meals at my disposal - if you eat sensibly and do some walking and maybe a bit of swimming it will soon come off!

I dont know how much I put on as like others, I was weighed at first appointment then not again but think about 2-3 stone. Surprised not more as LO demanded cake daily. The majority did seem to melt away in the first month & apart from the boobs (bf) back to usual size above waist. At 3 months on I am still carrying extra 4" on waist & hips/thighs which is making me even more pear shaped than I was before. I dont feel much heavier or care that much. My main problem is that I have always found getting trousers to fit tricky as far too big on waist, if I can get my thighs/butt in. I have built up a good selection over the years & dont fancy the time nor expense of replacing them. Have tried getting some jeans but not having much luck as the low cut style which all womens jeans seem to be are too low for belt & exaggerate the muffin top belly. Have ended up in mens as they are higher waisted so more flattering.

In England mums weight isn't monitored strictly either. Only at the start of pregnancy do we have a look to see if the mum is obese or not as that will have an effect on her chances of getting complications such as: raised blood pressure or gestational diabetes. For extremely obsese women (superweight) we even need to order in special beds and other equipment.
But when a normal weight person gets pregnant that's it no more weighing.
Funny that Belgo said that her weight wasn't monitored in Belgium. My own family was and my aunty and cousin were both told off for not gaining enough!
Personally like some of you on here, I only gained a little bit of weight (about a kg per month) up to 7 months and then also without changing my diet I suddenly ballooned. Both pregnancies I ended up gaining 4 stone! I'm normally tall and slim and so when I tell people about this they never believe me, but I did, really!

Belgianchocolatesmama · 23/02/2007 11:17

By the way it took me 13m to lose the weight with my dc1 and only 4 with dc2. I put it down to a better bf'er and being slightly more active from day 1 with the other lo around. My diet was more or less the same with both.

andyrobo237 · 23/02/2007 12:38

The only time I was weighed was at 38 weeks the day befolre my elective c-section. I didn't ask why bt assumed it was to do with the quantity of anesthetic required for my op.

spongecake · 23/02/2007 16:09

summerfruit, I have a french mil and she was also obesessed with my weight gain as was my mum. We told her we don't have scales (true) so that was that. I was weighed at my first appointment but never since. i was genuinely interested last doc app so asked if could borrow her scales. have put on 5 stone oh dear-still baby healthy, me healthy -enjoy your pregnancy, it will all fall off i expect when you have had the baby.

My hospital tried to weigh me on each visit, I printed out the NICE guidelines saying it's not useful and told them to bog off. They wrote each time on my record 'patient refused to be weighed'.

Having said I spent all my pregnancy scoffing biscuits and ended up a complete lard-arse (something I am fixing now )

Plibble · 23/02/2007 20:53

I was weighted once on booking and then never again.
Either I looked fine so they left it or they were scared that if they upset me I would sit on them and squash them. The latter is sadly more likely - in pregnancy fruit, veg and anything healthy brought on horrendous heartburn so I lived on icecream and pineapple chunks (the sweets) for 7 months .

Lynselbob · 23/02/2007 23:07

I think it's only really important to seriously consider weight when you're pregnant at its extremes - either the severely underweight, or those who are obese - in terms of predicting and managing possible complications.
I put on about 4 stone during my pregnancy, and seemed to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight fairly quickly by being active and breastfeeding for 8 months, but though I wasn't that happy with my weight before I was pregnant my body image is the best it's ever been now. There's nothing like a beautiful baby to put your weight insecurities into perspective - suddenly those lifelong niggles about not having a great figure seem to pale into insignificance .

Polster · 26/02/2007 16:38

Living in Belgium, my midwife weighs me at each appointment to keep an eye on the weight gain, but doesn't give much stress.

Gynae I have scans with weighs me each time, and hassles...

Only thing I've found weighing to be useful for is after baby's born, on a 'fat day' you can console yourself with how much you've lost compared to just before the baby arrived.

jenjingles · 26/02/2007 16:52

This is areal issue for me as i was obese before i found out i was pregnant and was actually awaiting a consultants appointment to have a lap band operation!!Ihate my body normally so being pregnant is nice because i don't have to worry about people asking when the baby is due and getting embarassed when i say i'm not actually pregnant love just fat!!I eat a healthy diet and lost 10lbs when first pregnant c'os i felt so bloody ill, this is my 3rd baby and when i get weighed i just look away, losing it after is going to be a nightmare, felt even more downhearted and actually mortified when ob consultant said they were having to follow the higher BMI protocol through my pregnancy, so all you lucky gals out there who reached pre baby weight quite quick after send me some secrets pllllease!

lancarra · 26/02/2007 17:15

The midwife said I was obese but I now weigh 2 kg less than my start weight I am now 35 weeks! They are not really interested in my weight just my bmi.

How did that happen

dogday · 06/03/2007 19:50

Hello,

I'm a BBC journalist working on a story for tomorrow and desperately need to hear from someone who has experienced any pregnancy difficulties because they were overweight.

It could be you had trouble conceiving because of being overweight ? Or problems with delivery or scans ? Maybe you didn't get enough advice and didn't even realise how being overweight could affect you.

If you have an exeperience on this subject please email me now [email protected]

Thanks
