I wonder what is the point of weighing at the booking appt and then not again?

lulumama · 18/02/2007 14:22

never weighed at any midwife appointment,i think you can write your height and weight on your hand held notes if you want.

TrinityRhino · 18/02/2007 14:22

well I think that the m/w who weighed me at the booking in probably still thought it was important to weigh regularly and probably would have but I never saw her again

Anglaise1 · 18/02/2007 14:53

I live in France and get weighed at every mid wife visit - at 7 months got told off for having put on 1Okg but the gynaecologist has never mentioned anything. I find the French more obsessed by weight than the British generally.

colditz · 18/02/2007 15:08

They weigh you to dertermine how much anaesthetic you would need I think.

Bubbaloo · 18/02/2007 15:18

I'm VERY overweight and my weight was never an issue when I was pg with Ds or even now(30 wks pg).Infact this pregnancy I haven't even been weighed by my midwife-they just asked me how much I weighed at my booking in appointment.Last time I put on 1 1/2 stone all the way through and this time I've already put on more than double that.
How people can complain they have put on a few pounds is beyond me-after all,you are making a baby in there.
I lost 4 stone after ds was born and I'll do the same this time, but for now I'm enjoying the pregnancy, the baby is healthy and that's all that matters IMO.

motherinferior · 18/02/2007 15:24

My GP went on at me a bit. I cried. And I didn't even put on much weight anyway, FFS.

Ceolas · 18/02/2007 15:28

I thought that Colditz, but your weight would have changed by the end of your pregnancy anyway surely? What's the point of weighing on booking then? SWIM?

misdee · 18/02/2007 15:31

i dont gain weight in pregnancy i lose it as i suffer terrible morning sickness. with my last pregnancy at 36weeks i weigh 2lb more than when i was weighed 12 weeks and 34weeks, and my consultant went mad basically as i had gestional diabetes, and told me i wasnt 5to gain any more weight etc (i am overweight), but i felt mortified. i was induced 2 weeks later and dd3 weights 7lb 13oz, so really he shouldnt have said anything!

colditz · 18/02/2007 15:57

maybe if (like me) you are clinically obese anyway, they veiw you as a lost cause and don't bother weighing you.

cinnamongreyhound · 19/02/2007 09:12

I was weighed when I had first bloods done and not again. Was told it's to get a more accurate result for one of the tests as your hormone levels differ depending on your weight.

MrsFish · 19/02/2007 09:25

I was weighed at my booking in on friday but wasn't weighed at all with my first ds 2 years ago. They seem to change their minds by the month what you can and can't do. Also the list of foods you can and can't eat seem to change each time I go too.

Going by my book it reckons you put on 3-4 pound in the first trimester and 12 pounds in each of the 2nd and third trimesters. This is what I am aiming for this time round. I put on 3 and a half stone with ds and it took me ages to shift it, so am determined not to go there this time

Booboobedoo · 19/02/2007 09:39

I was weighed at my 24 week scan and had put on about 2 1/2 stone. (Was 9 stone 6 when I got PG).

Haven't been weighed since, and am not interested. I wouldn't be surprised if I gained 3 1/2 - 4 stone altogether though.

I had terrible MS until 5 months, and still gained 8 pounds in the first trimester. No idea how.

I'm going to have some cake now.

eidsvold · 19/02/2007 10:13

only time I was weighed in last pregnancy was at my pre admission appt and it was by anaethetist as I was having a c-section. Am now almost 35 weeks and have been weighed by no body.

That is here in australia btw. But from memory with no1 ( who I had in the UK) again not weighed.

dejags · 19/02/2007 10:18

I put on more than 30kgs with both of my previous pregnancies (yes that does calculate to about 66lbs ).

Lost it all and some after DS1 was born (by the time he was 18 months old). Lost most of it with DS2 and am now pregnant again.

This time I am 26 weeks pregnant and have put on 16lbs when at similar stages in my previous pregnancies I would have put on about 25lbs.

I was only ever weighed at booking and never again - nobody every mentioned it. Might have had to kill them if they had

Chandra · 19/02/2007 10:47

The only thing that I find interesting about all the differences between the countries is that the practice of measuring mother's weight gain and scanning at every mothly visit is not a French obsession, but actually a quite widespread practice out of the UK.

Besides... I spend my pregnancy in the UK and DS was born here and... my midwife insisted in monthly visits, took my weight at each visit and in the last few she even measured my bump. According to some doctor friends, that's a quite basic method to find out what a scanning actually shows. So I guess it's all about different practices leading to get the same info.

dejags · 19/02/2007 10:50

Chandra - in South Africa, they'd scan you at every gynae appointment (the standard here is, that you are cared for by the consultant - there are no midwives in the normal system). The gynaes are also totally weight obsessed - I heard of a lady who was told she needed to attend weightwatchers by a gynae (she was 36 weeks and had gained 14lbs!!).

I have refused all but the 13 week Nuchal and 22 week anomaly scans - my gynae thinks I am borderline insane . People think I am totally nuts to be having a Midwife led homebirth.

The difference in care between the two countries is astounding.

madmarchhare · 19/02/2007 10:51

Was never weighed during my pg, although Im unsure if this was bbecause I was terribly sick and lost weight to start with so they just assumed..

Biglips · 19/02/2007 10:53

i was never weighed when i was pg either and i didnt have morning sickness at all...i knew what the weight i was before i got pg and then i weighed myself 2 months after i gave birth so i had a rough idea how much i put on which was about 2 stones

bambi06 · 19/02/2007 11:14

im 16 weeks and have only put on about 5lbs and dont look pregnant and mw has said nothing whereas in my first pregnancy when i didnt show until about 5 months they kept going on about me not putting on weight and was i sure i was eating ..yeah everything ..but only when hungry which is how i am and it works for me.. my first ds was nearly 9 lb when born so not tiny compared to the little bump i had yet my second dd was 7 1/2 lbs and i was huge from early on so it really doesnt show anything but i wa ravenous fo rthe first 12 weeks with this one and wanted to eat pasta nd other calorie ridden food and onlyput on 2 lbs and yet now when my appetite has reduced ive started actually puttig on more weoght ..slowly though but i prefer it this way as i dont wan tto be huge and uncomfortable too..

Chandra · 19/02/2007 11:28

Dejags...

"my gynae thinks I am borderline insane . People think I am totally nuts to be having a Midwife led homebirth. "

Mine (back at home) splurted out his coffee when I mentioned about not being reviewed by anyone other than a midwife. Mum, friends and even MIL thought I was crazy at going through all the process and birth without a doctor. But maybe that is because the sole use of a midwife at birth is illegal in my country (aparently there should be always a doctor present), not that it doesn't happen (especially in remote places were a doctor is not available or is not economically viable) but still...)

Most expat friends describe the process as a very primitive experience of birth (us, mother nature and the midwife), one is worshipped by her own doctor for giving birth without any kind of pain relief, but all were fine and are happy about the process. My only complain about it is that midwife decided that a problem at birth very common in my family was not going to happen because I was tall and had long feet, which according to the equation used here, assured I wouldn't have it...but I did, with the unfortunate complication of having a midwife at birth who didn't notice it was happening until it was almost too late

Chandra · 19/02/2007 11:33

But before some one jumps on me... I'm just saying that with my particular characteristics it would have been better to have a doctor but... otherwise, it was fine (and feel privileged of having a very respected community wife, which I respect very much too! )

Piffle · 19/02/2007 11:34

My midwife weighed me at 1st appt only
I never put any weight on til 30 wks and have put on about 4 kgs (10lbs)(am now 35+4)
this is simply as I have stopped drinking and eat a lot rmoe healthily due to blood sugar complications (hypoglycaemia)
But have had no pressure or even a mention from m/w doctor or anyone (except MIL who likes her sons to have slim wives despite not being so slim herself nor are her sons come to think of it )
I think if you are overweight then you get advice about health and eating perhaps?

buffythenappyslayer · 19/02/2007 11:41

with my last pregnancy i lost 3 stone because of my thyroid, they prscribed me too high a dose and didnt check again.but i never got weighed at all by the midwife whilst pg.

i dont think i'll be losing anything with this pregnancy as im eating like a horse,i am worried abit about putting too much weight on,but im not going to obsess about it.

i think if you just eat sensibly then you should be ok,eat when your hungry etc.

MrsMar · 19/02/2007 11:42

I went to see a gp at my surgery when I found out i was pregnant, he wasn't my normal gp, and I was worried about some funny heart beats I was getting. I was quite concerned about my heart, which was pounding quite badly. He spent about a nanosecond saying it's nothing to worry about, he then proceeded to lecture me about weight. I'm two stone overweight, so I do know that I have a problem, but I'm quite food aware, and I exercise pretty regularly. The doc said I should go on a 1000 calorie a day diet, I should only eat bread and salads, cut out all animal products and fat from my diet. I was quite shocked, and said don't I need protein. His reply was "why?" I was really shocked by what sounded like really irresponsible advice, and asked another gp that I normally see. She said that was nonsense, and that I should try to eat very healthily, only have meat or fish 3 times a week (must admit I'm a real meat eater, at least once a day!) and on other days have something like jacket potato and baked beans for dinner. Just be really healthy, be careful of excess fat and sugar, but don't go crazy. Seems like much more sensible advice to me. The other doc did keep saying that I'd be much more sedentary after having the baby, but that sounds like a typical man's response to me, everyone I know with small children are run ragged most days, doing housework, looking after kids, entertaining children etc!
