Blood tests, feeling like a pin cushion

Before the pregnancy I realised I have no memory of having any blood taken from me in the past (perhaps maybe as when I was born but that doesn't count!). So naturally I was extremely nervous when it came to the blood tests.

The midwife offered to take my blood during my booking appointment but after trying both arms she admitted defeat as my veins kept collapsing whenever the needle went in! So I had to book myself in at the hospital for the blood tests.

At the appointment the nurse used an extremely thin needle and success! They took 3 vials for 3 tests (hiv syphillis etc, blood type, can't remember the 3rd :S). But I got a call today from the midwife saying everything is fine but they couldn't process one vial because it had been labelled incorrectly (blood type test) and I need to go back again for it :(

My 12 week scan is next week and I've also opted for the screening to be done then too. Is it likely that they will be taking more blood at that appointment for the screening? Or is it just measuring up nuchal folds etc. If they are taking blood I'm hoping they can do my blood type sample then too.. Whilst they got the needle in the arm.. Instead of another two separate appointments with needles :(

If anyone knows whether they take more blood at the scan screening test that would be great! Thank you x

Hi,

Yes, they took bloods with me to help form their calculations for the screening results.

I have skinny veins too and midwives and nurses have had trouble getting blood, but never with the phlebotomists at the hospital, as that's all they do all day so very good at getting the blood.

You'll be in and out in no time with that part. As for if they'll redo the other test, you can ask but I really am not sure.

Ah thanks for your reply snowflakes :) I think I can get the extra blood vial done for the missed test then too! Thank goodness! Don't like needles :S xx
