Can i have a maternal request induction before 40+12?

I've had 2 babies, both times I had to be induced. I don't hold out much hope for going into labour spontaneously this time either, as I've never bloody managed it before!

My local trust induce on term plus 12 not 10 as I've had in the past- plus 12 for me is Christmas day Sad

I reeeeally don't want to go in on Xmas day and be apart from my girls, so does anyone know if you can have an earlier induction as per maternal request? NICE guidelines don't seem very clear? I only want a couple of days earlier if I do need one, so term plus 10?

If anyone can advise I would really appreciate it! Seeing my midwife on Tuesday and want to present my case, so to speak.

TIA!Smile

Do your midwives offer sweeps after 40wks?

Nikki2ol6 · 10/12/2016 15:02

Yea I would think so!! They can't expect you to go in on Christmas Day!!! Iv been booked for an induction for medical reasons but they did ask me when I would prefer it and we got to talk about which week I wanted it done and we decided the week of my due date was best so I will be induced at 39+4 if he's not here

AButterflyLightsBesideUs · 10/12/2016 15:07

Our area don't induce until 40+14 which scares the bejeesus out of me. It certainly can't hurt to ask.

muscatmama · 10/12/2016 15:11

I think you'll find that they won't want to induce you on Christmas Day either- it's a bit dodgy staff wise. At least my hospital didn't. I got 21st instead. Have you actually asked them?

chloechloe · 10/12/2016 15:41

I don't know the answer but I think a lot of hospitals avoid scheduling interventions on the public holidays so hopefully they won't want to book you in on Xmas day anyway!

I had the opposite issue whereby I'm due on Boxing Day but due to various issues am not allowed to go overdue or be induced. Which meant my hospital wanted to book an ELCS for 22.12 on the basis they won't schedule surgery then and I guess the same would apply to an induction.

When I went for the section and it was cancelled, I said so induction will be at 10 days, the midwife said no 12. I said oh no, that's Christmas day, she said hopefully you'll go into labour yourself then Confused so sounds like they just treat it as any other day Sad

Will begin on Tuesday and see how it goes!

I would love to go into labour myself but I'm not holding our much hope lol!

Could you ask to go in at 14 days over instead? I feel your pain I was induced at 14 days over with my first, 10 with my second. But if it's a choice between Christmas day and 2 extra days being pregnant I'd rather go for the latter x

daisydalrymple · 10/12/2016 21:45

Did you give birth the same day you were induced with your two previous pregnancies? (If it gives you any hope, I was 11 days od with dc1, and 5 with dc2. Dc3 decided to come 3.5 weeks early...)

PonkAlert · 11/12/2016 05:44

I was induced as an emergency on the 23rd and had DD1 on the 24th. It was very quiet (well, for a labour and postnatal ward) and the midwife said it was for two reasons: first, no inductions or sections are scheduled Christmas Eve/Christmas Day for staffng reasons; second, apparently lots of women "hold on" at home then come in Christmas night/Boxing Day. Apparently the 26th & 27th have a slightly higher birth rate due to women and hospitals avoiding Christmas, so unless it's an emergency or your hospital's policy I doubt they'lol induce on the 25th.

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 11/12/2016 10:07

daisy, no with my first child it took a couple of days but my second it was less than 2 hours Shock

I think if they say no to 10 days I'll have to hope I make it to 14 without any problems Confused

Good news, midwife has booked it for +10 so 23rd! Obviously I'd still love to go on my own but if I don't, at least I'll be home for Christmas with my girls Smile
