Hi guys,

I just saw a programme which mentioned that this year is not just the year of the pig but is the year of the golden pig. My mum is eurasian singporean but when I asked her about this myth she had never heard of it.

Just wondered since I am currently pregnant and due in September. Does anyone believe that this is an especially lucky year?

Afraid I haven't heard of the Golden Pig, but a Chinese friend did say that being born in the year of the Pig is very lucky and that it was a good thing we didn't have our baby last month at the end of the year of the Dog (apparently the dog will be wagging its tail then and that's bad luck!).

A Golden Pig sounds great, so I hope someone out there knows the story.

Chinese Astrology is very complex. They have a 60 year cycle based on a combination of the 12 animals and 5 elements. The elements are earth, air, fire, water and metal but metal is changed for gold in some systems.

The Pig is lucky, gold is lucky - when you get the year that combines the two it is very, very lucky

Hi SaintGeorge, the golden in golden pig doesn't refer to this as the element for 2007 is fire not metal. It is something to do with fortunetellers saying that this year is special for some reason.

Not sure why.

I know, that explanation was off the top of my head before I checked the charts. Although some people have apparently decided you can still make it a golden year by saying the colour of fire is gold!

It appears the 'legend of the golden pig' is thought to be something recently invented. Have a google, there is some interesting reading

im interested in chinese years too and what the animals mean.

lalibela, what did your friend mean by the year of the dog, wagging tail thing being bad luck?
