I am 7 weeks and 3 days pregnant and really struggling with nausea. I don't fancy any food at all but I know I have to eat as otherwise I feel faint and shaky. Today I went to the gym at lunch time and then when I came out I must have walked into about 5 food outlets and walked straight back out again as I couldn't face any of the smells let alone eating the food, this was followed by me aimlessly walking around panicking and getting teary which is just ridiculous!! Anyone else have similar issues? Really hoping this gets easier soon... we have wanted this for so long but now its here feel like I am worrying all the time and the nausea is just making everything so hard!

Try breadsticks. I found avoiding getting hungry seemed to help.

kikisdelivery · 02/12/2016 15:19

At around 14 weeks pregnant, despite my sickness dropping off by then, I also had the walking-round-shops-and-crying moment one lunch. Nothing took my fancy, each food outlet was really stressful/busy and I was overly sensitive to the smells/noise, and I just ended up having a meltdown in the middle of a shopping centre and sobbing outside a Disney store Blush. As others have said, maybe have a few light, bland snacks in your bag - I also found nausea felt worse if I was more hungry.

Hellmouth · 02/12/2016 15:22

Are you sure you want to be exercising when you can't bring yourself to eat?

Try going into somewhere like boots and just grab a meal deal. no weird food smells in there!

Try to eat more regularly, it will help with the nausea. My MW said it was related to your blood sugar, so if it's low because you haven't eaten, you will feel worse.

Thank you for all your tips, it is nice to know I am not alone in feeling like this. I haven't yet seen a midwife or GP - waiting for my appointment in a few weeks so it is nice to get advice on here. I will try things like breadsticks and bland biscuits, just worry that it won't be enough nutrients but I guess something is better than nothing and I am taking folic acid. I actually find that exercising takes my mind off it - even if temporarily and helps with the tiredness too.

I found salt and vinegar crisps, ice lollies and fajita wraps were about all I could stomach for a while. Just eat what you can it does pass eventually. The baby will get what it needs. It is actually fairly normal to stay the same or even lose (a little) weight during the first trimester.

PamDooveOrangeJoof · 02/12/2016 16:14

Salt and vinegar crisps helped here too.
And lemonade.
And macdonalds chips
I remember the feeling well, it's so awful I know!

Jupiter2Mars · 02/12/2016 16:15

Plain bread, or breadsticks. no butter or anything else. For dinner: plain boiled pasta

Whatsername17 · 02/12/2016 16:17

Another one who lived on crisps. Just eat what you can stomach. It gets better x

GinIsIn · 02/12/2016 16:19

Another vote for salt and vinegar crisps here. And plain bagels with a tiny scraping of marmite. Bland white carbs are your friend here, essentially.

EsmesBees · 02/12/2016 16:20

I lived on various white carbs and cheese. And I too have wondered aimlessly in and out of sandwich shops during lunch utterly unable to find something I fancied.

Take it easy at the gym though. Early pregnancy is exhausting. Especially if you can't eat properly.

rememberthetime · 02/12/2016 16:28

It was pringles for me. YOU need to eat when you can - so have food available at all times. Not just at lunch time. Check t see if you need more iron too. MY vomiting caused a deficiency. At 12 weeks I got medication for the nausea as I weighed less then than before I got pregnant.

Soubriquet · 02/12/2016 16:35

Don't worry about nutrients

The baby will take what it's needs from you and leave you to suffer the downfall

Anything you can eat is better than nothing. Even if it's just ice poles and crisps

Newbie10 · 02/12/2016 16:37

Thank you all, honestly it has cheered me up getting your responses and tips. Think from tomorrow I am going to carry a handbag full of crisps, breadsticks and biscuits to make sure I am covered. I never realised pregnancy would be this hard but I am also hopeful that feeling this way is a good sign that my body and hormones are doing what they should be.

It will get easier and will be worth it in the end. I kept breadsticks in my desk drawer for a while and had some beside my bed.
Take care of yourself.

tissuesosoft · 02/12/2016 17:07

I really sympathise OP, I had HG the entire pregnancy and it was a nightmare at times but I found the following helped-
Real fruit ice lollies (del monte orange ones were great) in the freezer- I used to have these in the middle of the night or for breakfast when I couldn't face solids.
Homemade smoothies- I took them in a flask to work.
Lucozade- this was my staple throughout pregnancy!
I had to stop all hot food for the last few months of pregnancy, just couldn't face it.
Try bland food or cold food (not great for this weather I know), and one food at a time to see if you can keep it down etc

PippaRose · 02/12/2016 17:39

I was lucky and didn't feel sickness but all I fancied was really plain food (mostly white carbs, jacket pots etc)

Does get easier though

drinkyourmilk · 02/12/2016 17:40

Ice lollies, salt and vinegar crisps and chips. I lived off them for weeks.

haveacupoftea · 02/12/2016 20:22

Full fat coke really helped me from weeks 5-11 when i would get shaky with hunger really quickly. Brings your sugar up to a point where you can consider food. Just eat what you can. I've been eating loads of salt and vinegar pringles, and clementines.

Newbie10 · 02/12/2016 21:32

Salt and vinegar crisps def seems to be a theme Smile I'll give them a try tomorrow. Just counting down to the 12 week mark in the hope it eases! Thank you ladies, hope you all have a fabulous weekend x

I think I lived on toast for three meals a day in the first trimester. I also went on anti-nausea pills at about 8 weeks which helped because I had quite strong aversions and loss of appetite until about 16 weeks. And if I found something I liked I would eat lots of it for about 2 days and then go off it! And as pp mentioned, it also helped avoiding getting hungry so eating little and often is good. Once I got hungry it was harder to eat.

Don't worry about the baby, though, they're getting everything they need from you as long as you're eating something (even the bare minimum) and drinking lots of water (water was one of the things I went off because it started tasting funny!)

Jupiter2Mars · 03/12/2016 08:09

For me, both times, it started in week 9, got really bad (ie 24/7) after week 12 and switched off in week 16. It feels endless at the time, but looking back it was soon over.

It took me a very long time to be able to face mint tea again though, or anything with ginger.

I am surprised about the crisps because aren't they a bit greasy?

abeandhalo · 03/12/2016 08:24

Don't feel guilty about not getting enough nutrients, I don't think I ate a piece of fruit or veg for about 3 weeks when I was feeling my worst in the early days. Occasionally when I wasn't feeling completely shit I would quickly down a smoothie or juice.

It will get better and you can focus on eating healthier then, but for now just eat what you can stomach whenever you can manage it!

I remember going to the supermarket w/ husband to do the weekly shop & all of it was just yuck. He ended up having to go to the supermarket every day for tea b/c I couldn't tell in advance what I would be able to face!

jadeyty · 03/12/2016 14:59

My sickness was at its worst weeks 8/9 then slowly got better so you may soon be over the worst! Seems like it lol take forever to be over but honestly looking back, those weeks went quick. Just eat what you can, little and often.

Passmethecrisps · 03/12/2016 15:02

Gosh yes to salt and vinegar crisps.

I am almost 12 weeks and have had many tears over what to eat. I make sure I have had something to eat every hour - at least! Cereal bars, little tubs of nuts, pat cakes and crisps.
