Had my second scan and wanted to find out the sex of the baby. The lady just said 'operative word would be a girl' but couldn't tell us anymore. Me and my husband looked at each other and thought what the hell does that suppose to mean. She said don't start decorating the nursery. Has any of you ladies ever had this and if so.....what does that suppose to mean?

it means

she thinks its a girl

it is most likely a girl

sometimes they get it wrong though and people are surprised by the gender they're not expecting so it is best that you don't make any huge financial / effort commitments

but 99% certain its a girl

and a sonographer in need of a bedside manner

I had a miserable sonographer get huffy because we asked if she could tell the sex as she was starting to get the wipes out for the gel (despite us having asking her at the beginning, and her "forgetting") so she whipped the scanner out again, had a quick look, said she couldn't tell really, "60% chance it's a girl" to which I said - gee thanks, we worked out it was 50% before we came in here all by ourselves...

She was a girl.

I just think they avoid commenting these days wherever possible.

It's easier to spot a boy, because you can have an affirmative sighting but the absence of that might mean that it's a girl, or that it's a boy with his bits tucked away.

Haven't met a sonographer yet with a decent bedside manner though!

Actually, I always thought it was more affirmative spotting a girl. With the scan for my frist dd, the sonographer said with girl, you'll see 3 dots on the genetalia area. So, 3 dots ... definitely a girl. With a boy, it's a 50/50 chance that it could have been a finger.

As far as I know, they're a lot less confident about spotting girls - I only know a couple of people who've had 100% definite 'it's a girl' from their sonographers.
There has been no doubt whatsoever about mine being a boy

The person operating the scan magnified the area between the baby's legs and showed us, so yes, it looked like a girl and she wasn't modest about it, . It was quite funny. The image is in black and white and shady, so I hope there wasn't a mistake as I got pink stuff now.

My sister knows some sonographers at the hospital I go to because she works on the ultrasound reception. She told me that they find it easier to spot a girl because they see three lines.
