Weight gain

Please reassure me that this is normal!

I'm 27 weeks tomorrow and have gained almost 2stone this pregnancy 😫 I started off at pretty much bang on 11st & I'm 5'6, so I was pretty average, and when I went for my 16 week appointment I had gained around 3-4 lbs so wasn't too concerned.

Since then, I haven't weighed myself - I just haven't felt the need to - but I have weighed myself this morning and I'm 12st10!!! I am so horrified knowing that I have gained the majority of this weight in the last 10/11 weeks.

Strangely enough, I don't feel HUGE - naturally I feel bigger due to my belly, and I've noticed that my boobs have grown a lot (I was a B-cup pre-pregnancy and now I'm wearing a D), but my legs/bum/arms etc all pretty much look the same. I have definitely gained weight on my face though - I feel like it's twice the size that it was!!

This is something that I'll be bringing up with my midwife at my 28 week appointment next week as I'm really concerned about the fact that the third trimester is when my baby will put most of his weight on - and won't this then impact upon on my weight, too? - and I don't really know why I'm posting on here... for some reassurance, I suppose?!

Had I started out at 8st and then increased to 10st, then I don't think that I would feel quite as negative about it (although I'm probably wrong). I just think 13st sounds like an awful lot 😖 Especially when I've been trying to eat healthy and not go overboard. I might look into downloading a pregnancy workout DVD, although I'm not sure whether it would be approparite to start it so late on?

Please share with me your weight gain - or loss - stories whilst I'm over here feeling sorry for myself!!

I'm 28 weeks and 2 stone up as well, same height as you and I was about 10st7 starting out - this is baby #6 and I've put on 3.5 stone every single time even with differing activity levels on each pregnancy and it's all come off again afterwards so trying to just not think about it really!

How much do you lose once the baby has been born (as in quite soon after birth) if you don't mind me asking?

That's my biggest worry - that I wouldn't be able to shift the weight once I've had my baby! ☹️️ I feel OK now - I don't LOVE my figure, but I don't mind it because I'm pregnant... But don't think I'll be quite so optimistic afterwards!

Sorry - that was supposed to read how much did you lose!

Your weight gain isn't that excessive OP. I gained about 20 lbs with DS2 but shortly after birth I was about 15lbs less than I started at! However, I had GD and had to really, and I think I obsessed a bit too much, watch my food intake. He was quite a chunker at just over 9 lbs and 'waters' going was like a biblical flood. Add placenta, womb lining (I know there's a term but I can't remember it) and water retention and bingo.....35 lbs gone! Wish I could say I kept the weight off.....cadburys has the power to get me through sleep deprivation!

If you're worried, talk to your midwife.

I went from 8.5 stone to 12.5 stone when I was pregnant. I lost it again but it was really hard!! I'll try and be more careful next time, but when you're tired and hungry it's hard not to eat.

GreedyDuck · 01/12/2016 20:23

Eat healthily and stay as active as you can is my advice. Don't use pregnancy as an excuse to eat loads more than usual - you'll find the will power to resist cake is in short supply when you are sleep deprived and breast feeding.

In all seriousness though, 2 stone is not excessive, esp if you were a healthy weight to start with. I put on about 1.5 stone, but was fat beforehand and had to eat low GI throughout as I had gestational diabetes. Once I had my daughter I was pretty much back to starting weight, which was a bonus.

All women carry differently. I know a very slim woman who put on 5 stone, but it all went pretty quickly afterwards.

pinkpantsrock · 01/12/2016 20:25

with ds1 i put on 4 stone and lost it all in 9 months, with ds2 i put on 5 stone Shock and i'm 6 months post birth and lost 4 stone so far.

most of mein was water retention, i suffered so basket i was signed off work.

at point of giving birth to ds2 i was 16.9stone, ds2 was 8lb 13oz, i put on even more water after he came out and i didn't start to lose weight until about 10 days in.

I lost the first 2 stone within a month, then next two after last 5 months

I gained 4 stone in my last pregnancy. Still had over two to go three months after the birth so it wasn't all baby by any means. I think when you have a big bump, the rest of your body looks smaller so I didn't feel particularly big!

I'd lost it all by the time he was nine months though and it was reasonably easy. Got pg again though and am bow piling on the beef again... sigh. I just lack self control.

Baby no 1 august 2012 pre pregnancy weight 12st7lb put on 5st7lb

Baby no 2 April 2014 pp weight 11st9lb put on 3st7lb

Baby no 3 due next may pp weight 11st4lb currently 12st and 17 weeks (but most of that was in the last month).

I think every pregnancy is different and as long as you are eating heatltily and not excessively abd doing some exercise your body kind of does it's own thing.

Whatsername17 · 01/12/2016 21:42

I'm 33 weeks tomorrow and I've gained 1st6lb. Pre-pregnancy I was 10st5lb and 5ft6. I honestly think the key is just eating normally. I have weeks where I seem to gain and weeks where I stay the same. I don't think your weight gain is excessive. Just eat well for your growing baby. Withy dd I gained 2st and honestly it fell off post partum. I've always had to work hard at weight loss but not after I had dd. I wish I'd put a bit more on with dd to help with breastfeeding if I'm honest.

oldlaundbooth · 02/12/2016 01:15

Last pregnancy I gained 3.5 stones. This was me eating a healthy diet, but lots of it.

Not sure how much I've gained this time but it's at least two stones, probably more. 34 weeks.

It's not a time to deny yourself food, and even SIL who ate like a mouse during pregnancy still gained 3 stones! Cottage cheese, fruit etc.

You might as well just eat what you fancy, you'll gain anyway, you're supposed to!

Cosmicbird · 02/12/2016 07:27

That has varied! First time it was all gone within a week, much slower on #2 and #3 with a lingering half stone I couldn't shift between pregnancies. After numbers 4 & 5 it melted away within about 6 months and I actually for the first time in my life had trouble keeping weight on! I bf them all which definitely helped with the weight loss.

buckyou · 02/12/2016 11:36

I'm 30 weeks and put on about 1.5 stones so far but I feel massive!!! I don't think I've put on any more than last time but I started off a bit fatter. I find it really difficult! Also I can't drink or sleep or ride my horse so I need some pleasure in life which seems to be eating lol.

I put on about 35lb last time and lost most of it in the first month or so. Didn't manage to get the last 1/2 stone off. I'm going to try really hard this time though.. Then no more babies!

Honeybee79 · 02/12/2016 14:25

It really sounds pretty average to me! With DS I put on bang on 2 stone by the time he arrived. With DD, who arrived last week, slightly less.

As long as you're eating well and trying to do some gentle exercise it's fine! Don't worry.
