Dentist won't give me a filling until baby is born...

I'm booked in for the 30th January but when I bite down on it it hurts, I don't want the tooth to break.
Does anyone know why he would be reluctant to give me a filling whilst Im pregnant?
I know the mercury fillings are a no no when you're pregnant but you can have the other type surely?

I'm in a similar situation. My tooth has broken but the dentist won't fill it permanently until after the baby is born. She did fill it with something temporary, it sounded like it was called a fudgee - I'm sure that's not the spelling (maybe not even the word). Sorry that's not very helpful.

Can you ring up and ask?

They wouldn't do mine either. I had to have a tooth taken out when ds was about 3wks. My teeth went to shit in that pregnancy. I booked a filling in january and I now have to cancel because I know they won't do it. I can only imagine it's because of the numbing injections.

Find another dentist. I had a non-mercury filling when PG but the dentist waited until I had the baby before replacing a mercury one.

FWIW (and don't take my word on this) I believe the risk is miniscule anyway. Dentists are rather risk averse.

It could be due to risk of infection and then passing it on to baby but not too sure. I only say that because I was supposed to have a mole biopsy and in the end the head consultant examined me and said she would rather it wait until after giving birth to check on it again in case of infection... it must be awful with any toothache. Totally recommend Orajel for toothache although do check it's ok for pregnancy!

My Dentist did my filling at 33 weeks but wouldn't use anaesthetic, my waters broke.

I'm in the same boat. My dentist told me he needed to do an X-ray to view the level of decay and couldn't fill it until he had this info.

I had a white filling the other day (39 weeks), no anasthetic needed....

They are being incredibly cautious. The volumes of local anaesthetic they use are safe in pregnancy, and the X-ray dose to the baby from a dental X-ray is minimal. But you can't force them to do work they're not happy to do!

I started a root canal before I got pregnant, and they wouldn't do the formal completion, but I still had to have it cleaned out and re-filled with a temporary filling during pregnancy.

I had a temporary filling done at 39 weeks, the dentist said she'd rather wait till baby was born due to needing X-rays. Can they give you a temporary one to solve your pain?

I had a white filling done at 28 weeks with no problems. Perhaps find another dentist as this does seem a strange policy.

Same here, but I did have a temporary one until after baby was born, would they not do that?

Strange, I'm 35 weeks and went to the dentist yesterday. They said I could have the X-Rays but might not be able to have certain fillings and they wouldn't know what I needed until they were doing it. They suggested doing the X-rays now but I declined, if I'm going to have to wait for treatment I don't want to risk the X-ray. Luckily my tooth isn't painful though, icing was I'd push for it. You don't have a cold or anything at the moment do you? Only it was a heavy cold and blocked sinuses that triggered my tooth pain and made me aware of the dodgy tooth, but the pain has gone now. I know colds are more common in pregnancy.

Mine would only put a temporary one in. Partly because the tooth needed to be x-ray ed which she was unwilling to do and partly down to the use anesthetic. If you are in pain I would go back and plead with them.

I ended up getting a tooth taken out whilst pregnant for this reason. Would a white filling be ok? Also did you know that in Boots they selling temporary DIY fillings for £10? You would have to check if suitable for pregnancy though.

I can't believe the number of dentists refusing to do X-rays on pregnant women your baby will only be exposed to X-rays if that's where the X-rays are directed, so unless you have teeth in your abdomen that they want to X-ray there is absolutely no risk to the baby.

Had feeling in my last pregnancy with local. Local anaesthesia is fine and does not cross placenta. As for mercury feelings, that should not be used any more pregnant or not as they leak, not sure why they still offer them in the uk.

Gosh, years ago I had a filling while pregnant - non-mercury.

Can you ask them specifically why they won't do it? Something I've read said that women shouldn't be denied medical treatment because they are pregnant/ breastfeeding if it puts them at risk. There can't possibly be a risk to a baby with a dental x ray. I had a chest xray and it didn't go near the baby. If it's the filling they could use the another type. I'm sure there's options for anaesthetic too. Maybe ask your midwife what normally happens as you can't be the first pregnant woman who needs a filling!

Pp I'd go back about the mole tbh too.

molly the type of filling you had is a glass ionomer and it's called Fuji. That type of filling is good for long term temporaries, although can wear down quicker than a composite or amalgam so once bambino is born you can have a permanent placed.

bumble they cannot leave you in pain. They can put in a temporary filling. I think most dentist err on the side of caution

I had a white filling with the injections when pg, I had quite a bit of work done actually, being pregnant RUINED my teeth and gums. He didn't say anything about the anaesthetic, only that he wouldn't give a mercury filling.
