Is navy blue ok for girls?

Hi,

Just wondered what people's thoughts were on navy blue pushchairs for girls? I love the navy bugaboo but we don't know what we're having. Is it too boyish?? Xx

OP posts:

I have a navy pram / pushchair and I love it, we don't know if we are having a boy or girl

EdithWeston · 13/11/2016 20:45

It's probably not an attack as such.

It's just a reaction to an example of hod reprehensible changed toward the more rigid that gender stereotypes have become in as short a period as the last two decades.

Because when I had my eldest, no-one would have dreamed of buying a hot pink pram/pushchair became it was impractical and unlikely to be handed down if you went on to have boys. They simply weren't in the marketplace. And everyone had blue/grey/black and occasionally green or red for both sexes.

That, in the space of less than 20 years, gender stereotyping has taken hold to such an extent that the question is necessary is in itself quite amazing (in a bad way, I'm afraid, so I get the derision)

I have boy girl twins. I had a red pram and a black buggy. They there also the two commonest buggy colours in every baby/toddler activity group we went to.

I have actually never seen a hot pink or pale blue Pram outside a pram shop.

Most people go for black, red, grey or navy.

TinPanAli · 13/11/2016 21:02

No one is attacking you.

It is a comment on the whole notion of gendered 'stuff' for babies.

If I habitually wore hot pink, bright orange, lime green etc when out and about I might have bought a hot pink pushchair for boy or girl - as I said because in the end a pushchair is seen with YOU.

Enjoy your pushchair shopping - navy will be smart and classy, and go with lots of things.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 13/11/2016 21:08

I have a navy pram. Everyone thinks dd is a boy because apparently blue is a boys colour. She doesn't seem bothered and neither am I (she would make a very beautiful boy Grin)

GinIsIn · 13/11/2016 21:15

Oh for gods sake. You asked a very dated question that perpetuates stereotypes. People have pointed out that it perpetuates stereotypes.

headinhands · 13/11/2016 21:22

Of course navy is okay for a girl. Navy is an eminently sensible colour for a device that will be used with a small child.

What's the worst that will happen if you put a female baby in a pram of a colour that you worry is a male colour? Serious question?

WhatWouldDarylDixonDo · 13/11/2016 21:27

The pram my DC were in was bright yellow. Definitely not a "boy" or "girl" colour. I would have had no issue with navy for the same reason. Or pink for the same reason. Or any other colour for the same reason!

If you like it, get it.

seven201 · 13/11/2016 21:30

I think you're overthinking it (easy to do as a pram is a big purchase)! I knew I was having a girl and ordered a navy pram. Nothing to do with the sex of the baby but because I like the colour and wanted something not too bright. I'm really happy with my navy one.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/11/2016 21:32

I had a navy McLaren when ds was little, I bought it before he was born and we didn't know if the baby would a boy or a girl.

Celticlassie · 13/11/2016 21:38

I fancy a teal one and I reckon I'm having a girl. I did wonder briefly if people might assume she's a boy, but if they do I'll just correct them. (Glad I didn't ask on here though! Wink)

Ilikegin · 13/11/2016 21:48

I prob wouldn't be an obviously girly pram (like the cosatto with pink bow) if I was having a boy but think any colour pram is suitable for either gender. Navy Blue is classic! I've just ordered a navy sleepsuit for DD even though it's on the baby boy section.

Ilikegin · 13/11/2016 21:49

buy not be..

Lancelottie · 13/11/2016 21:54

Nope. Navy is absolutely unbearable on a girl. I can say this with certainty, having had it inflicted on me as school uniform throughout my teenage years.

HeCantBeSerious · 13/11/2016 23:30

I personally hate navy and never wear it. I had bright purple hair when carrying DD, so bought a bright purple pram. It got used for DS when he came along too. several years later and his penis is still in tact

TurquoiseDress · 14/11/2016 00:16

Yes absolutely, I love the colour blue- would buy a blue pram regardless of whether I was having a boy or a girl!

To me, it's a baby, it doesn't make any difference what colour the pram- they won't notice- the colour is generally all about ME and what I prefer Grin

Evergreen17 · 14/11/2016 07:45

I have a dark pink sling for my boy. And pink blankets and orange and yellow and green. My DH will weal my boy in a pink sling. Changing bag is red and pink.
Honestly. This is the one chance to show them that it doesnt bloody matter!!!!!!

Evergreen17 · 14/11/2016 07:46

HeheHmm our boy Grin

PurpleDaisies · 14/11/2016 07:53

If navy "wasn't ok" for a girl, who do you expect would pull you up on it? Confused

TeddyIsaHe · 14/11/2016 07:54

DD's pram is... BLUE! Well, turquoise. And she doesn't have a single item of pink clothing... everything is grey, or white or blue. I'm probably awful, but I just can't stand pink and glitter, never have. Of course dd will probably grow up to adore all things sparkly and girly, and that's fine. But when she's little enough to not care I buy what I like. Don't worry about what other people think, life is far too short.

TurquoiseDress · 14/11/2016 08:27

Teddy
Don't worry you're not awful, I really dislike anything pink or glittery.

If I were to have a girl in future she is going to be mainly be dressed in anything but pink! And none of those bloody head bands.

But that's just me Smile

And in future if she chooses to embrace pink stuff & glittery shit, well that's up to her.

With a Priam/pushchair, they really are not going to care.

OP- with respect, there are much more important things to worry about!

YoHoHoandabottleofTequila · 14/11/2016 14:05

My pram has a purple hood and I have a boy.

SquedgieBeckenheim · 14/11/2016 14:33

We didn't know what we were having first time, and bought a navy travel system. We did later buy a (grey and pink) flowery cosy toes for DD1. DD2 will have the same set up.
Ignore the rude and sarcastic replies! Buy what you want, the baby won't care.

Nikki2ol6 · 14/11/2016 17:40

My little boys pram is navy.... but you can get navy for girls

EmzDisco · 14/11/2016 17:44

I have a DD and it turns out she can travel in blue prams, cars, buses and trains with seemingly no ill effects. She even has a blue jumper Shock
