UTI Nitrofurantoin

Pain when going to the loo Sunday and Monday. Doctors on Tuesday confirmed urine infection and prescribed Amoxicillin. Wednesday and Thursday got worse and pain like period pain and what felt like a stitch, generally felt unwell, doctors on phone and midwife said I hadnt given amoxicillin long enough. Back to doctors Friday and infection was worse, amoxicillin hadn't touch it. Prescribed Nitrofurantoin. Now feeling awful, feel sick, weak, hot and cold, headache, struggling to eat. 17 weeks pregnant and really struggling. Can anyone advise please?

I think you need to phone 111 and see if you can be seen by OOH GP.

Nitrofuantoin made a considerable difference within the first 24 hours with my last UTI.

I am concerned that the infection you have has already gone deeper and may require IV antibiotics. You may have a kidney infection, but urosepsis is also a possibility. You need to be assessed face to face by an HCP.

Out of hours GP isn't available for 2 hours and they said to contact maternity unit who don't see you until you're 20 weeks. Doctors said to give it until Monday. It's driving me mad. I'm just not getting better. So you took Nitrofurantoin and all was ok for you?

See the OOH GP in two hours. It may be faster than going to A&E which is your only other option at this point.

Nitrofuantoin got rid of my uti symptoms within 48 hours, but I finished the 7 day course. Not all utis respond to the same antibiotics, nitrofuatoin is first line treatment. Urine sample culture results take roughly 3 days and can identify that an alternative antibiotic might be needed if it doesn't treat the infection you have.

Not while pregnant, but I was prescribed Nitrofurantoin for a UTI and I had a bad reaction to it that sounds similar to what you are experiencing. I have had UTIs since and they have avoided prescribing it for me again, so it may be that you have an an adverse reaction. I would hang on the 2 hours for out of hours GP if you can OP.

I am worried for my baby tho

How long was it from taking it to having a bad reaction?

I was prescribed it by out of hours doctor at the weekend, Sunday i think. Then assumed I would start feeling better so went to work Monday but was sent home as I was faint and dizzy, and feeling really sick, as well as all the UTI symptoms! It was then that I called my usual GP and they said to stop taking it, they would prescribe something else for me that afternoon (OH had to go pick it up for me as I was too dizzy to even think about driving - luckily had taken train to work!). Timing sounds similar to your experience. Try to keep drinking plenty of water, even if it is just little sips.

Can you try calling maternity unit back and saying you were advised to call by 111 because of your symptoms and that you are worried about your baby?

OOH GP will likely prescribe something different.

It could be a reaction to the antibiotic, or it could be that the infection isn't responding to the antibiotic and your condition has worsened. Your best bet it OOH GP or A&E who can assess the cause and sort the issue or refer you to a gynae assessment ward for further investigation.

Thanks for your help. They said it was the infection that was making me poorly and some of the effects of the antibiotics but checked my 'sample' and they were working. So I'm basically on bed rest and feeling better for it. Got up this morning to take my son to school and had an extremely dizzy/feeling sick/headache spell. Laid down and shut my eyes for a while and felt better after. The pain has gone and the sick feeling is a bit like morning sickness has returned but I'm hanging in there hoping it'll all go on Friday when I finish the course. Nurse confirmed there was no more blood in my 'sample' today so that makes me feel better but I'm still worried about the effects on the baby and hope it doesn't reoccur
