I am 18 weeks + 1 and I havent yet felt the baby move. At least, nothing I could definitely say was the baby. This is my first pregnancy, but not sure whether to start worrying yet? Any advice/experiences?? Thank you!

1st one takes longer to feel. I felt a teeny flutter when i was about 4mths gone with DS. Try to not worry, i'm sure everything is fine!

You probably have felt baby move but just not known it yet! Friend of mine 22 weeks and only just felt movement. Everyone different, don't worry.

newby29 · 12/02/2007 16:29

Thank you. I am trying not to worry, it just feels amazing that it is quite big now and my bump is quite big now and I still cant properly feel it wriggling around!!

Goodness me that's still fairly early to be feeling movement in your first pregnancy. You might not feel anything until 22/23 weeks.

Try not to worry. And congratulations on your pregnancy.

ShowOfHands · 12/02/2007 16:31

Check where your placenta is when you have your 20wk scan too as it might be anterior (at the front) like mine, so you won?t feel much until the baby is big enough to kick around the sides. Then goodness me you?re in for some fun!

newby29 · 12/02/2007 16:34

Thank you showofhands, I will do. I dont get a scan until 22 weeks where I am, so I think thats in part why I am worrying too - that i dont have reassurance in 2 weeks, at 20 weeks. But I am seeing mw next week. So I gues if I can hear a heart beat I should treat that as reassurance enough!

Hi Newby - I felt my Bean move at 20 weeks and my cousin who is super skinny didn't feel her DD till 24 weeks. Don't be worried at all. 18 weeks is early to feel it particularly for your first

Such fun once they do. I poke Bean and she pokes back...hard

Mumpbump · 12/02/2007 16:39

When you first feel your baby move, it is so slight. The only thing comparable is when you get a muscle spasm in your eye if you've ever had one. One of my friends suggested lying on a bed with your hands on your lower stomach and just being very still. Of course, your baby might be having a quiet patch when you do this, so you might need to do it a few times... As others have said, 18 weeks is still pretty early.

franke · 12/02/2007 16:43

I didn't feel either of mine until 20 weeks. I distinctly remember it too - it was like being lightly twanged with an elastic band on the inside of my womb. I imagined dd launching herself off the side to swim a length or two! She always did it first thing in the morning.

Brilliant, thanks everyone. I do feel a lot better. I think because most people on here are mums already and therefore not on their 1st it has made me feel very late for not feeling things already. But I fel much more reassured that 18 weeks really sint late for 1st pregnnacy. Thank you thank you! I cant wait until I do feel it!

Newby, I'm 18 weeks (+1 day) with 1st and I may have just felt movement last week, but then again it might have just been indigestion! I fully understand how you feel - I really want what I felt to be movement, as I agree that the reassurance would be nice - and I got to hear the heartbeat at the mw the other week too. What I felt was a fluttery feeling, like butterflies in the stomach, only it was lower down than my stomach. Still wondering what it was, but I realise that this is still early, so could have been anything. Hope you feel something soon though (and that I feel something more certain) and that the scan goes well. I'm lucky to be having mine in just a couple of weeks, sorry you've got to wait a bit longer.

I was about 20 weeks too when I first felt ds move, we were on holiday and were just sitting down with pre-dinner drinks when I felt him

Bubbaloo · 12/02/2007 18:08

I was 21 weeks the first time I felt Ds move and this pregnancy was about 24 weeks,so I guess everyone is different.

ShinyHappyPeopleSharingKisses · 12/02/2007 18:10

I felt my first at 20 weeks, my second at 16 weeks and my third at 17 weeks.

Perfectly normal Newby, the baby WILL be doing aerobics in there don't you worry.. and the first movements you will feel are like the tinest little tickle/shifting sensation, so quite obscure.

alex8 · 12/02/2007 18:47

My consultant said feeling movement at 22 weeks was average. I have a feeling that the mumsnet average is very much lower which could make people very paranoid. I have 2 friends who felt their babies move once or twice the whole pregnancy and both had very healthy children.

I felt my first child move at 22 weeks and second at about 20.

ShinyHappyPeopleSharingKisses · 12/02/2007 19:17

It also has something to do with the size of the pregnant lady in question. Larger ladies may feel their babies later I have heard.

Clare123 · 12/02/2007 19:22

I didn't feel my baby move until around 21 weeks first time around. I think its quite normal, but like you I was worried.

cinnamontam · 12/02/2007 19:23

Yeah i heard that - I am somewhat well endowed but my unbelieveably skinny cousin felt hers at 24 weeks and me at 20 weeks so who knows

gladbag · 12/02/2007 19:25

Just to agree with the other messages, I went for a scan at 21 weeks, having not felt the baby move at all (1st pregnancy), and I was worried by then. But the scan showed a wriggling, twirling baby, which I felt for the first time about a week later. Perfectly normal HTH
