I'm really worried. I am currently 10 weeks 5 days pregnant. I am now taking pregnancy multi-vitamins but for the first 5 weeks of my pregnancy I was taking normal mullti-vitamins which contained 800 micrograms of vitamin A. I'm worried I have harmed the baby, I have read the label and it is retinyl aceate form so definitely the type you shouldn't take. Will any damage show in the 12 week scan? has anyone else been in this situation before? and if so what was the outcome?

I didn't know I was pregnant with my first until 8 weeks, also taking a regular multivitamin which I had been taking for years so would have built up in my system. I really think you will be fine, please try not to worry, I really think the advice refers to massive amounts. Horrible to feel worried though but put it in a box now until you see the midwife and try to rest and enjoy the weekend, congratulations on your pregnancy!

INeedNewShoes I'm sorry too just tired as I'm low on iron shouldn't really chat in that state but I'll ask my friend for op.

ahsan · 05/11/2016 13:08

Yes sorry congrats op :)

I think it will be fine. People have done worse. I went on holiday and had almost 2 bottles of wine a day and then came home and found I was pregnant literally the next day.

People don't know they are pregnant sometimes for weeks and weeks and drink and smoke and eat stuff they shouldn't all the time.

" BratFarrarsPony I'm not going to sink as low and simply ignore you." Grin

I am ignoring you! I am ignoring you! LOL

Op I asked my friend who is a midwife and she said that as far as she's concerned that's it's fine but she will ask her fellow midwife as well and get back to me. She's been a midwife for 4 years so if she wasn't concerned and I wouldn't be 😊. Hope that gives you some comfort.

OP, don't worry, this is fine. The amount you were taking is only just over the recommended daily amount for an adult woman. Plenty of pregnant women who take pregnancy vitamins with lower amounts of vitamin A in (remember deficiency can also be detrimental) and have a diet rich in vitamin A (I just drank a large carrot juice) will be consuming the same level. It is only teratogenic at much much higher doses. Please do speak to midwife to put your mind at rest, but be reassured that you have done nothing out of the ordinary.

Hi OP, I hope your pregnancy went well and your little one is okay. Just wanted to know if everything went okay after that vitamin A intake during early pregnancy. I am going through the same. Have been taking my normal vitamins and not I’m pregnant6 weeks. I am so worried!

Gabbs1992 · 04/07/2020 15:10

That was exactly the same as me! I’m 10 weeks now so I’ll let you know how I get on at my first scan it’s in a week and a bit. Can’t stop thinking about it to be honest, it would be great if the other ladies on this post could let us know how there babies where? Thanks Xxx

UmeZ · 04/07/2020 15:35

Good luck. I hope your scan comes out normal! Please do update me. Xxx

I’m experiencing the same scare! How did everything work out with your little one? I’m so scared, so would love to hear what happened to someone who experienced the same thing.

Mpow · 13/03/2023 18:10

Thank you so much @Gabbs1992! Were you taking vitamin A as beta carotene or retinyl palmitate? I was taking 450 iu of retinyl palmitate daily until 6 weeks so now I'm really freaking out!
