I just got a call saying my blood came back and my iron was 91 and I need to pick up some pills. What should my iron be? I'm 31 wks and been very tired and my heart rate is very fast

Mine was 101, my midwife told me I was only just under. She said they recommend you take iron if your results show anything below 110 I think?!
Just so you don't get too anaemic when losing blood after birth Smile

NeverAShadowOfDoubt · 03/11/2016 19:55

Mine were 95 at 24 weeks and I was put on ferrous sulphate 200mg three times a day. I'm now 26 weeks and have knocked them down to 2 a day as I started getting stomach pains and black diarrhoea Sad but seem ok with 2 a day. I think my midwife also told me under 110 and you'd need iron tablets.

MyBlackCat · 03/11/2016 20:17

Mine were 105 when I got put on supplements then 107 when told them I could stop taking them Shock

Winegumaddict · 03/11/2016 22:32

I was 96 when I was put on iron tablets. They've come up to 102 but I have to keep taking them. For my area you need to be over 100 to go to the birthing unit but they prefer over 110.

You might want to try Spatone which is a liquid iron supplement. I am taking it as I read there were much less side effects than the tablets you get from the Drs. The one with the apple is really nice and working well so far Smile

Mummyme87 · 04/11/2016 10:43

If the bloods are from booking ie. around 12weeks your HB should be above 110g/L (old money 11.0gd/L). If bloods are from 28weeks should be 105g/L or above (10.5gd/L)

Mummyme87 · 04/11/2016 10:49

Spatone is not enough for an HB of 91. A shachet of spatone contains 25mg of ferrous sulphate, you will be on 2-3 tablets per day which is 600mg

Saku · 04/11/2016 20:53

I am 33 w.. with iron 93.. they gave 200mg ferrous sulphate 2 times a day..

had taken them with my first pregnancy also... with same amount (just black green number 2 sorry TMI)

Normal iron levels for females is 121-151 I think. Slightly higher for chaps. But totally normal for it to drop in pregnancy, mine went down to 91 and my colleague was 86! Take your iron and it'll soon come back up :) you can eat things like green veggies, cereals fortified with iron and lentils/pulses too. It's all good stuff :) xx

redjumper · 05/11/2016 13:55

Yes OP your level is quite low. Mine was 105 last pregnancy and I felt like total crap - very tired and breathless. Meat and fish are by far the best sources of iron (after iron tablets of course). Veggie sources aren't absorbed well at all.

PberryT · 05/11/2016 14:00

Oh gosh, mine was only 75 now I am worried!

Gp prescribed ferrous fumarate 3x per day. Only been on it 4 days and not really noticing much difference. Trying to up the iron in my diet too. Strangely I hadn't really had any symptoms of anaemia and thought I was just pregnant tired.

redjumper · 05/11/2016 14:10

It must effect people in different ways. I think if mine was 75 I'd have dropped dead! 🙈 Or you are just super tough!!Grin

Another thing I remember being told is that the anaemia needs to be corrected by birth so you are in a healthy state in case you bleed after delivery.

PberryT · 05/11/2016 14:16

It really must. Other people are Shock when I tell them the level. Even the midwife was a bit eeeek that's low.

How long until the tablets have an effect? I'm expecting to start feeling amazing but not sure that will happen!

redjumper · 05/11/2016 14:56

I think it takes a few weeks. My level went from 105 to 125 in 6 weeks and I only took one tablet daily.

Kittenrush · 05/11/2016 15:31

It took me two weeks to get up to 101 from 91. Have continued taking and have been on them about 4 weeks now and the difference is amazing, i feel so much better. Didn't know about the absorbency thing I was just following advice from others as I don't really like red meat so was advised veggies, pulses and cereal. Anyway, it's nothing to panic about honestly! It is low but the tabs will sort you xx

Naturemums · 27/02/2025 12:35

Why when all of your iron levels are low do you take the pills, floradix (liquid iron) boost levels alot quick has a higher absorption rate and is natural for your little bubba's in the belly not judging just suggesting the products that come from mother earth rather than pharmaceutical companies ( also it will only take 1 to 2 weeks to get back to normal, even better than before pills take to long and are packed with filler, don't take my word tho look it up)

sel2223 · 27/02/2025 17:10

I know in the third trimester, it's meant to be at least 105.

I was slightly low so put on iron tablets but had a lot of sickness so wasn't keeping them down to see the benefits. My iron levels kept dropping until I had severe anemia and I was given an iron IV this week at 35 weeks. They are keen to get it back up before I give birth.
